Too many variables to say, to be honest. It all depends on exactly which radioisotopes are present and in what amounts.

One gram of Polonium-210 can kill 50 million people, but it's unlikely that hardly any of that was present to begin with, and its half-life is about 140 days. In Nuke school they taught us the rule of thumb that after 5 half-lives you can pretty much assume the stuff is all gone (generally). So by 1988 if there were any Po-210 to start with, it would be gone.

Cobalt 60 is a long lived fission product that mainly emits gammas. Strontium-90 emits betas and has a half life of right around 30 years so just less than half of whatever Sr-90 was there to begin with is left.

Overall my hunch is that MOST of the WORST alpha and beta emitters have substantially decayed away since 1986. but it's been a long time since I've studied Chernobyl (it was required study in Naval Nuclear Power School), so I am rusty on specifics.

Even 1960s and 1970s era nuclear power was still safer and cleaner than coal or oil.

I have always thought the anti-nukes movement was a knee jerk reaction, however, rather than rehash that argument, I dug up this article which makes some interesting claims, although I can't vouch for the credibility of the site.

Today’s reactor designs also have far more safety features than older installations. These range from duplicate emergency cooling systems to prevent overheating even if some systems fail, through to so-called “core catchers” that would contain the reactor core in a worst-case meltdown event.

Some designs will cool passively in the event of a loss of power to the cooling circuit (as happened at Fukushima). The heat from the core will gradually dissipate from the walls of the pressure vessel and through the cooling circuit by convection. The reactors that are being constructed today benefit from 60 years of experience gained in the design and operation of nuclear power plants around the world.

But future reactor technologies –- so-called “Gen IV” designs – offer even better inherent safety. One of their key features are fully passive cooling systems so the reactor is never dependent on external power for safety. The reactor is carefully designed so that overheating actually reduces, rather than increases, the power output of the core. The core and cooling systems are not pressurised, and using liquids other than water for cooling prevents the risk of creating hydrogen: both of which drastically reduce the risk of explosions as occurred at Fukushima.

Which is why I suspect that if Russian soldiers are suffering from radiation exposure, it's more likely the result of a deliberate act by Chernobyl plant employees, than accidental exposure. And given the horror stories coming out of Ukraine about what the Russians have been doing, I cannot blame any Chernobyl employees for slipping Russian forces a "hot biscuit," regardless of what might constitute a war crime or not.

I know Boris is a bit of buffoon and has been compared with Trump but watching this I couldn’t stop imagining Trump in his golf cart.

Oh shit! If true then this is a serious step up in the types of weapons systems we are willing to send the Ukrainians. I imagine there will be more.

    And goodbye Black Sea Fleet.

What's interesting is that Harpoons ship-launched missiles and Ukraine don't have the right kind of ships to launch them from. However, NATO has apparently experimented with rigging vehicle mounts for them, so that they can be fired from trucks.

Sure. But no they didn't get radiation sickness while there from disturbing the soil or crazed nuclear personnel.

And it's supposition they continue to carry radioactive articles.

You really don't have a point. I'd say you're rather dull in fact.

Was it NPR or @Paladin where I heard the joke about the KGB working in three man teams? One who could read, one who could write and one to watch the two too smart for their own good.
