Something tells me that you don't become the richest man in the world by being a less intelligent version of Maxwell Smart.

I guess for some it's comforting to believe that becoming fabulously wealthy is not so much a matter of the relentless pursuit of an ambitious vision, but a series of accidents.

But success almost never works that way. If success were just luck, some couch potato shlub would occasionally win the 100m Olympic gold over the less-blessed athletes who trained their hearts out for years.

My cousin has an estimated net worth of 12 million (so says the internet) and works ridiculously hard. I can't even imagine how hard Musk works and the pressure he's under.

I remember when Yahoo bought Tumblr for $6 billion - and 6 years later sold it for a few million.

You become the richest man in the world by inheriting enough wealth to put you in the top .01% already - you know, South African diamond mines - and then do the thing that the other guys won't do.

And as the other guys are smart and work their ass off too, that almost always means doing something immoral.

And in any case, Tumblr didn't REALLY start losing value (and users) until 2018 after SESTA was passed. It was a restriction of content, not a loosening of restrictions that murdered Tumblr.

It was a couple of things. Yahoo deciding to remove all adult content from the platform, which was not a requirement of SESTA. Yahoo not understanding that Tumblr wasn't set up for ad monetization. Mayer initially didn't understand the product, they put no one on monetization for a couple of years, then Verizon purchased the company and put in a team that had no idea how to catch up with the major players in that market.
