2. from what I understand, the case is taking a "Gamer Gate" direction in which the social media narrative has little to do with the actual events.

Ok, I have almost zero idea of what this whole Depp/Heard thing is about. My knowledge of it extends to she said and he said. I really don't see what the big deal is about the whole thing and further than the two of them.

Both the standard of proof and burden of proof is different between a civil defamation trial and criminal domestic abuse trial. I'm unaware of Depp being convicted of domestic abuse (unless I'm missing something).
