I'd be living in a fantasy world were I to REALLY THINK the U.S. would EVER repeal the 2nd Amendment because THEY WON'T Sadly it's NEVER going to happen.

But you'd think with all these mass shootings & the shootings that go on everyday in other places but don't get the media attention of the mass shootings that there'd be SERIOUS DISCUSSION about FINALLY REPEALING THE 2ND AMENDMENT.

But alas ... NO

This ISN'T 1776, the world in which the 2nd Amendment originally came about in is LONG LONG GONE. There's NO danger of the British invading out of nowhere to attack & kill Americans in this day & age.

The 2nd Amendment is a surviving living political & legal fossil.

Its the founder's biggest blunder, and given no other country has our nightmare gun culture, it's the biggest legal blunder of the human species.

If we could bring some of the founding fathers forward in time, and show them school shootings and other gun violence, I'm pretty sure they would go back and write the second amendment a little differently. And then write entire screeds on the topic of "WHAT IS WRONG WITH FUTURE PEOPLE?!"

This is a mental health issue, not gun issue. Here’s a brief history of school shootings in the US. The majority of them carried out by young boys mostly in their teens and mostly by what we would today call incels. I find it disturbing that it’s mostly boys and I wonder why girls don’t carry out school shootings, but maybe they prefer suicide by other means. Eliminate guns and you’ll still have troubled teenagers that need help. They are still likely to commit suicide and attempt to take others out in the process, it just will be with another type of weapon. Of course none of this answers why cops who sign up to protect everyone’s lives regardless of race would stand by and do nothing to stop shooters.

Yeah it seems likely that absent any meaningful gun control reform, as the pile of children's bodies grows, activists are going to start swinging for the fences and at some point everything's going to come to come together at just the right time and the 2nd amendment will be repealed entirely, and guns will be banned entirely. It's fucking mental that people accept school hardening and police officers in schools and active shooter drills as normal and a-ok. It's despicable -- no, evil -- that Republicans are basically saving things like universal background checks for when there's a chance Mitch McConnell might lose an election without it passing. I imagine a spate of school shootings in states with Republican senators all up for election 10 days before the general election will probably do it.

And the number of mass shootings ballooned when the Brady bill expired.

When violent felons are paroled and property crimes aren't even prosecuted in some places, outright bans are off the table. Not that you could ever enforce such a fantasy in the States anyway.

We definitely need to do something about mass shootings. However, I will only accept solutions that don't inconvenience me in the slightest. I don't care how much those solutions affect other people, but I better not be affected at all, and I damn well better not have to actually do anything about it myself.

Such an amendment would likely give plenary power to the federal government to regulate and confiscate them. In practice it would be difficult to enforce, but those who think of themselves as law-abiding will turn them in (see Australia), which should massively reduce the number of "angry teen stole mom's gun, shot up a school" stories. Not passing judgement here, just saying what's likely on the horizon.
