We interrupt this random Star Trek discussion to remind you of one of the greatest scenes ever from the franchise: (And yes, I know it's going to piss off the purist nerds but what a great fucking scene.)
Lorca had that secret override for the spore drive (and probably everything else) in his chair, didn't Picard's chair have similar functions? I seem to remember Wesley using the interface in the captain's chair the first time he was allowed on the bridge and Picard yelling at him for it.
Seems like it would be faster to say "Computer, set a course for blah blah" than to navigate with an armrest panel a little larger than a smartphone.
I dunno, Google Maps is nice to use with a screen so you can see your different options before setting a course.
Just for a quick run through known space without the need for maintenance or communication or security. Not for a four-year mission.
I guess I was never totally clear on where Genesis was supposed to be, or how dangerous a trip it was.
Well, the Enterprise limped back home without any fuss, so there must be a reasonably safe route to take. And you don't put powerful, top-secret technology like that right next to a hostile border, right? Not even Starfleet would be that dumb, right?
I thought that was the point of the Klingon having to have the cloak - indeed, why they originally were going to have the Klingons have to steal a cloaked ship, and the Bird of Prey was supposed to be a Romulan vessel. It was in a remote area of space to find a totally lifeless terrestrial planet that would serve, but was still well within federation space. Then we get it retconned so the Klingons always had cloaks, they just never used them during TOS. LOL.
Nope, here's the timeline of Klingon cloaks. -Klingons were basically cavemen in tech until they were invaded by the Hurkh. -The Klingons beat the Hurkh somehow, and stole their tech. -The Klingon cloak was Hurkh tech that got lost somehow until T'Kuvma dug it up, along with bringing back the old mummifying sect of the Klingon religion. Hence why T'Kuvma's ship looked different from all other Klingon ships, and why it had carcasses all over it. -The rest of the empire copied T'Kuvma's cloak. -Discovery cracked the quantum frequency of the cloak, and rendered it useless by TOS. -Romulans invent a better cloak by TOS. -Klingons get cloaking back by allying with Romulans. -Klingons and Romulans hate each other by TNG, but Klingons kept the cloak.
Oh, great! Which episode of TOS did the Hur'q appear in? Certainly they were in canon by TAS. No? TNG did a lot of klingon stuff, so... Oh, not there either? So what does ret-con mean again? We seem to have different takes on that.
Hur'q were from DS9. Since you mention TNG, it seems you have some acceptable limit on time of mention. Perhaps you can clarify how long after a show suggests one thing it's unacceptable for a later show to suggest otherwise? Hell, for all we know the Klingons in TOS had working cloaks but never used them because dishonourable or because they wanted their enemies to see and fear them.

I remember seeing that on Robot Chicken. I haven't seen it since then. I was hanging out with a buddy from work way back then, we were pretty drunk and we thought it was the greatest thing ever. Luckily I had a DVR with my cable back them. So we watched it a few times.
Speaking of The Wrath of Khan, I came across this piece today by Sergei Prokofiev from the 1938 film, Alexander Nevsky. Does 1:50 onward sound a little familiar?
DS9's "Chimera" was on yesterday, and a thought occurred to me.. At the very end, Odo turns into a glow-y gas that surrounds and penetrates (yeah, yeah, make the jokes) Kira, and I saw obvious parallels to Cochrane and The Companion, and that made me think...I wonder if The Companion is one of the 100? The Founders supposedly sent the 100 decades, even centuries apart. Whaddyathink?
Well, pulling some of my books out of storage, including a box of the Trek I mostly accumulated during my teen years. We have too many books, so the ones I'm "bleh" to "okay" about need to go. So here's a list that I'm posting here rather than hijacking Face's thread: The box also contains some of Katy's Trek I haven't read yet. Also some of my Star Wars books which are obviously not a topic for this thread So, not a very good percentage of letting go right now. Still another box or two of Trek to find, even given that I lost some of them to water damage a while back, and there'll probably be some disposable TNG in there.
Very cool thought. There are so many Trek stories you can see how they could have linked them. Hell, I want the next big Trek menace to come from Scottie's Dyson Sphere in Relics - the one made of Neutronium. Made me wonder if they were hiding a couple of thousand Doomsday Machines in there.
Doubt it - the Companion showed a lot of abilities the Founders don't have - possessing Hedford and sustaining Cochrane's lifeforce for all those decades. You could handwave the former by saying it just took Hedford's form and lied to Cochrane that it had her memories. It also had electrical attacks and telekinesis, none of which the Founders ever displayed.
We didn't know changelings could be fog, or fire, or plasma until Laas showed up. Who knows what else could be unlocked?
Well, you might expect the Founders did. Laas would have to be a wunderkind if he was pulling shit that the others hadn't come up with even with several thousand years on him and the benefit of the Link.
