Gotta admit, it's almost adorable and touching to be called a retard by a guy who thinks humanity was born in America.
Even Mormons think people had to migrate in magic wooden submarines.

Yeah, that incredibly fast warming was over 20,000 years. Not 125.

It literally says that carbon even in this massive climate event was released at only a fraction of the rate that we are doing so today.

And it speculates two of the three possible reasons why were massive forest fires releasing carbon or the release of methane.

You know, like AGW is supposed to cause, which is why the scientists that actually understand these things are so concerned.

You can always tell bias - it takes what it wants from a source without listening to what the source is actually saying.

This source explicitly says that AGW is a huge threat, and that there was a mass die off.

So... so? The next dominant life form might be reptilian, and life might dramatically die off in vast areas suffer to desertification, and the oceans may acidify to the point that life is virtually wiped out there. Again.

All so rich oil barons can make a buck.

So is this thread for Hurricane Ian?

    I'm confused.

If not, there should be a thread talking about why God is punishing Florida.

(The rest of us know why, but I'm not so sure Floridians will get the message.)

Here’s an idea. It’s pretty easy, but it does require a bit of introspection. Instead of blaming people for no trying to understand your point of view, why not look at what you post and see if there is something else you might say/do/post that might help convince them?

The problem with the duh is corruption. People have been saying burry the power lines around here for decades, according to the long term locals who have been fighting it. Instead they have gotten a decade of wooden power poll replacement with cement power poles and a large focus on cutting trees around power lines. This is because there is an industry of power line manufacture and maintenance. The power lines also rent to other utility lines like phone, cable, and their fiber trunks. You lose a lot of revenue and maintenance crews if you take away those poles and above ground wires.

There are a lot of jobs in regards to replacing and maintaining above ground power and cutting trees back in a place where trees overgrow every year. The hurricane prep and aftermath industry in florida is a huge employer. Once you get done with an underground infrastructure you will lose a ton of work in florida. This isn't some socialist state where you can get a job if you want to work. Maybe if you had a state where people could work if they wanted to, and your survival was covered we could afford to get better infrastructure that did not require so many jobs to keep up.

Capitalism becomes an enemy of advancement at many points. Those people pay local governments to stop underground projects.

a lot of reasons to stay with overhead... it's not only cheaper to install, but a lot cheaper to maintain or fix. Significantly faster to repair, too. I suspect that a catastrophic failure is also more able to occur in an underground system.

This analysis does not seem to cover the difference between cement electric poles and wooden ones. That was the issue here in florida, and your article was written for wisconsin. southern florida concerns are much different than wiring remote homes in the middle of butt fuck nowhere. The newer cement poles withstand higher winds and last better in hurricanes and tornadoes, though they can be damaged. I would imagine cement poles are even more costly in areas with deeper freezes as it damages the integrity of cement poles that cannot get the full advantages of rebar that cement buildings can get. I am not technically sure on that one.

However, the full switch from wooden to cement pole power structure was much more expensive than replacement of wooden poles with wooden poles. The argument here was that the cost of the hurricane resistant above ground power that was needed was much more comparable to the below ground systems that could have worked with the underground water and sewer systems that are very present in the high density florida residential community systems. This is based on the decision to replace all the wooden power poles with cement ones that has spawned years of work and billions of dollars in government funds and customer costs for the electric company fucking horrible ass fuckwit scumbag nasty slime cuntrags. Yeah, the same floriduh power that loses power ever fucking day because they are assholes. It is a beautiful cool day where you can turn off your AC and enjoy the weather and wouldn't you know the fucking power goes out yet again because the duh.

There is a lot of community sewer and water spanning a large amount of area here unlike other places, so laying things underground shares costs and the maintenance and repair can be combined with the septic and water systems. Few people have personal wells and personal septic tanks and fields. The reality you might not realize is the power companies often own the poles, and they rent to cable and phone in areas where those services run on physical wiring. That means if the systems move underground they would lose their monopoly of that rent and have to shift to paying into the septic maintenance.

Interesting to this is laying fiber. Hotwire, the local fiber people, have been running underground fiber to communities for a while. It is easy to maintain, and quick to repair. It is also better for internet, cable, and phone services than above ground telephone pole fiber trunks. I found that high speed data trunks tend to get hit by large and stupid trucks and taken out all the time. Good luck hitting an underground fiber line, though I would not put it beyond the twats in construction trucks. I also think fiber can exist without power, or are a much less power reliant plant as light does not get as much EM interference and needs less amplification over distance than coax or copper wire. This means if you can get emergency power to your modem you can keep up a wireless network connection that your devices can operate on. This would mean your phones could use your house wifi rather than local tower signals to stay connected to emergency services and alerts.

Underground systems do not get fucked up by street flooding like that article wants to say. Things like fiber are much easier to waterproof than your old electrical based wirings as they do not have power through them. Also, you could run your massive high capacity electrical trunks above ground with smaller easy to repair and replace local wires underground. Rural costs are much different than higher density residential areas.

Not sure the type of pole matters. the idea is for them to be cheap and easy to replace. I did a quick search for preformed concrete poles, they run about $600 US- about the same as wood.

I do know you can't use the same viaducts for sewage and power... they have to be some distance away from each other meaning you'd need a parallel system maintaining that separation from sewage and water mains to every structure on the grid.

Our poles are about as indestructible as it gets. Metal sides with a concrete core.

Just don't hit them with your car, the Stobie Poles tend to cut them in two.

Thank you. I apologise for the delay in getting back to this, been a very busy few days.

I'll include my questions in a single post, to avoid any impression I'm trying to lead you into any sort of trap.

Do you dispute any of the following?

    1. Human activity is taking sequestered carbon (wood, coal, oil, gas) and emitting it into the atmosphere.
    2. These emissions have contributed to raising atmospheric CO2 levels to levels not seen for several million years.
    3. Increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere are scientifically demonstrated to have an insulation effect, resulting in the Earth retaining more of the sun's energy than it would have otherwise.

The options are much different when things become more crowded. Obviously underground in more ruyral areas is much harder. Access to underground areas in more urban areas is easier, and can be planned much more efficiently to distribute costs along multiple underground plants. Yes, there are reasons you won't want them in the same tube, but you can organize them to run together with similar access points and directions. The plants for underground power and data often run along the water and sewage routes even though they are not mixed. They will have different trunks given that water and sewage pumps and treatment are not going to be where your power plants, transformer centers, and data hubs would be located. However, keeping them in the same locational runs also hemps avoid problems when idiots dig up ground. And in the case of underground data and electrical webs you can more easily design a redundancy which would help alleviate the delay of severe repairs to small locations. That is not what a lot of modern companies do presently, but you could put in backup capacity that would help in lowering downtime and stress while upgrading or repairing.

The problem becomes that some of this is extra cost for reliability that really cuts into corporate profits while not losing customers because you established government connected monopolies that have no reason to be more reliable because they own the plant, and no one will kick them out. The cable company down here is in a panic because Hotwire is killing them in the communities running underground fiber. Hotwire only runs fiber underground. They are not renting pole space for their fiber. The other day the fiber was under a lake at my parent's house and they never lost connection. I could dig up the line with a shovel it is so close to the surface. It took one crew less than a month to lay it, and in an emergency you could get to the cable without a digger that looks like a hand driven garden tiller. You could easily repair fiber, and fiber does not splice like electric wire.

I do recognize it is not just that simple as you would still have tree trouble as tree roots are much harder to trim and maintain than tree branches and leaves. Underground lines in some places are a much smarter idea. I totally agree wisconsin should deal with above the ground wires. On postage stamp properties with big communities that have public water and sewage you should really look to underground utilities.

Err, no... underground in the sticks is easier to install and access. A lot less in the way and to be in the way of, like traffic diversions while the street is ripped up.

In either location, it's still cheaper and more efficient to replace poles than dig up anything, including a right of way.

I live roughly at Spadina and Dundas... not sure how much more crowded it could be without moving to Kowloon city? But I look out of my third floor window and hey, overhead power lines, everywhere. Because to start digging up the streets here would be madness (it was a shitshow when Bell [telecomm here] sunk their new trunk. closed the street for about 2 weeks and it's barely 150m long-overhead would take a day).

Funny thing... Toronto Hydro is publicly owned vs Hydro One which is publicly traded. Guess who's service is more reliable and usually a cent or two cheaper per KW/hr?

Yeah. New suburbs and housing estates get underground utilities here, but anywhere that's more than a few decades old has poles and wires because no-one wants to deal with the cost and disruption of undergrounding it all.

yup... if all it takes is ripping up a few lawns, it's not the worst idea.

doing my street would take a month and shut down dozens of businesses, and then there's the ongoing issue that it's built over an underground river, so random erosion is always a problem.
