I've been looking online off and on this last week, and a bit more time today. I haven't found or seen anything that I'm interested in or wanted to get. Pretty much have everything that I need or want currently. I've been thinking about getting a new laptop, but I don't really need one. Almost everything that I would need one for our user one for I can do on a tablet or phone.

I've been looking on Amazon, Best Buy, and Home Depot for deals. Even on Home Depot, anything I've looked at I already have. In tools, I have probably a dozen or so ratchet/socket wrenches and sockets, pretty much any power tool, several drills, impact drivers, circular saws, reciprocating saws, jigsaws, oscillating saws, routers. I even have a table saw and miter saw. An air compressor as long with nailers, staplers, cut off saw, grinders, impact drivers.

In the kitchen I have all the smaller kitchen gadgets and appliances I need, even some that I barely use.

The home is decked out as well, surround system in the living room and bedroom. Smart speakers, hubs, screens, lights, through out the home.

Kind of bums me out, I like getting new tools or tech this time of year.

So what did you get out after going to get? And anyone venturing out today or tomorrow?

Yup. Here a secret, the door buster deals, like the 75" TV for $300, or the 65" TVs that are $350 are very cheap models. They use slower processors, lower quality video processors. Essentially stripped down versions of better models. An example would be a Samsung 7000 model, the Black Friday special would be the 6980. They usually crap out within a year. If it's covered under warranty, factor or extended, your end up getting credit towards another TV which ends costing more.

Black Friday sales are scams. Prices on items people actually want are usually slightly higher than normal and the cheap stuff is just crap. The Saturday before Xmas is the time to buy if you’re going to get anything.

And contrary to popular belief, the busiest shopping day of the year is usually the Saturday before Christmas, not Black Friday.

I got the 65” Samsung 7000 series about 3 years back. It was a screaming deal, but I lucked out because the 60 hz refresh rate turned out not to be not an issue. Next one will have 120 refresh. The cool news is that my grand nephew is planning to go to Belmont College to study sound design. Two great things about that: it gives us a connection that I never thought we’d have and it means that a lot of gear I’ve collected over years only to gather dust will have a good home.

If you decide to upgrade, go with a Sony. They make mid to high end TV's. Essentially Samsung is the Toyota of TV's. They make entry level TV's up to high end TV's. LG is about the same, they can be considered the Honda of TV's. Sony can be considered the Mercedes\BMW of TV's, their entry level TV's are the entry level of Lexus or Acura, or the high end of Toyota or Honda.

Sony TVs are made to match the Sony cameras used by Marvel or other movie companies. Their video processors are better than those by other companies. And since they use an Android or Android based OS, the TV's can be upgraded via software to keep up with streaming services and meet video standards longer.

I know that there is a massive difference still in picture quality with higher end models, but also feel like for the most part, most tv's are "good enough" now. When we bought a new one last year we went for a Frame, because the aesthetics of how it looks most of the time it's not being used outweighed true blacks and all that business.

A Yugo? :ramen: I got to where I hated Sony during Circuit City days. Back then they had a large following of brain dead cultists. I actually like Toyotas and since I don’t have two TVs in my living room for a side by side comparison, I’m just fine with the Samsung

The Frame is a good TV. The picture isn't as bright, and the colors are a bit muted compared to other Samsung TV's. That doesnt mean the TV isn't as good, but it's an offset of the design. The screen is more matte than other Samsung TV's which is part of the design. It cuts down on the glare and when in picture mode it looks like a painting or photograph.

Did you use the mount that comes with it? And did the TV fit perfectly flat on the wall or are there gaps? And where was the One Connect box placed?

I used to be a Sony Snob (still am when it comes to professional gear) but back when I was looking to buy my first HDTV I asked our engineers which brand to buy and they all said Samsung, which surprised me because 99% of the equipment in the building is Sony.

I've bought Samsung ever since and have been very satisfied. The only Sony screen in the house is a 32" that I got on a Black Friday special several years ago.

TVs are getting like wine - 99% of folk couldn't tell a Pavillon Blanc du Château from a Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc.

I'm reminded of the Columbo episode where Donald Pleasance's oenophile character hung himself by being one of the only handful of people on the planet who could tell a fine wine had been overheated - which Columbo had stolen from his wine cellar (which overheated because he turned the air-con off to kill his trapped victim by dehydration).

Samsung TVs tend to go brighter and the colors are a bit more saturated. LG TVs tend to be less bright and have the colors a bit more muted. Sony TVs aren't as bright, but still are bright enough for just about any room. The colors are more realistic and closer to what you actually see. Sony also uses LG OLED panels for their OLED TV's. One interesting note is that the Sony 950 series actually have a better color gamut than the OLED TVs after calibration.

I don’t remember if it’s still true or not but for a long time it didn’t matter the TV you bought, they were all using basically the same panels in them and the only difference between say, a Sony TV and Vivo TV, were some of the electronics in them.

I'm with what matthunter said upthread. Most TVs these days look pretty good, even to my eye.

I care more about the content on the screen than minor differences that you'd need a scope to really measure.

Some brands, like TLC and Hisense are essentially the same TV's, both in panels and electronics. They just have different names on them. Other brands, for example store brands or brands exclusive to that chain can be made by the same manufacturer.

I was going to buy nothing, but now I have to buy an OBD2 scanner tomorrow because my check engine light is on and I want it to be off.

Yes, I know AutoZone will scan codes for free, but I've been meaning to get a scanner anyway.

Ours is a 2021 model, so a shiny screen. I do like the look of the matte coating on the 2022 models, seems to help art mode a lot.

We used the slim mount and just have the connect box on the table beneath it. Considered putting it in the cabinet but would get a bit too warm.

I don’t know what it costs but there are films you can put on the screen to give it a matte finish.

ordered better phones online on Thursday. Still not "latest and greatest" because we're not fool enough to give hundreds of dollars for a goddamn phone.

But, ya know, something 3 years old (release date) instead of six or some such
