He didn't like nukes but was perfectly fine with hydro and geothermal. And the antinuke contingent is getting smaller every year.

Don't care. At least one of the founders of Greenpeace has come out in favor of nukes. That guy's probably about the same age as @steve2^4, so it isn't necessarily an age related thing. And @steve2^4 didn't object to hydro or geothermal power. And his opposition to nukes had more to do with the cost of building new plants and the amount of time it would take to build them, more than it did anything else.

He also was a big fan of PETA, an organization many in the vegan and vegetarian community are happy to call "terrorists." So, anyone who thinks he accurately reflects positions of the majority on the Left is being as large of a dipstick as he is.

No, not net zero. But are you denying that lower emissions are a good thing? Is this going to be one of those "if a measure does anything less than solve 100% of every problem, you shouldn't bother at all" pieces of sophistry?

No, but you still have to burn coal to power your EV. They also can't go long distance. I think it's more practical and less expensive to go with hybrids.

Yes, but as @Order2Chaos pointed out, even if you somehow manage to charge your EV exclusively using coal-generated electricity -- which is unlikely, since coal accounts for only about 22% of U.S. power generation -- it would still have lower emissions than internal combustion.

They're not good for road trips at the moment -- a Chevy Bolt can go about 250 miles, then needs 7.5 hours to charge, while my Toyota Corolla can go about 350 miles, then needs 2 or 3 minutes to fill -- but for plenty of people, especially two-car families that can use one car for daily commuting and another for long trips, they can be a great option.

Personally, because I have one car and need it to fulfill a variety of purposes including long road trips and the occasional weekend spent driving Uber, I'm not going to buy a fully electric vehicle until the charging time comes way down and the infrastructure is more widespread. But the fact that it's not a good fit for my needs doesn't make it a bad technology. I'm also not going to buy a pickup truck, because I need to haul large loads maybe once or twice a year and it's cheaper for me to just rent a truck from Home Depot when I need one, but I'm not going to say that owning a pickup truck is objectively bad for everyone.

And none of that has anything to do with the content of the meme you regurgitated, so I'm still not sure what your thought process was. Other than "hurr hurr hurr, I found something that makes it sound like EVs are bad, and my tribe doesn't like EVs 'cause libs like EVs so I'm obligated to be against them."

I don’t feel obligated to post these memes. You should see the ones that I don’t post. But I thought it was funny so I posted it. I don’t have to agree 100% with a meme to find it amusing.

You can go 150+ miles on the Bolt and charge for 40 minutes instead with a fast charger (just never charge past 80%). If they’d used a higher voltage battery pack in the new model year :garamet: it’d be even faster. It’s very doable if you have an extra 80-120 minutes each day for your trip, and are willing to plan ahead a bit*. If you get something like a Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has an 800V battery pack, it can charge 180 miles in 18 minutes.

    * also avoid going over 75 unless you’re drafting. The air resistance at that speed eats power and you’ll end up needing an extra charge. I did a trip to LA and back from SF, and taking 101 was slower than 5, but only by about 20 minutes, instead of the usual hour (or it would have been but for a bunch of irrelevant factors), because I had to charge one extra time from the high speed travel, despite the shorter route and faster speed.

That sucks. The two car solution would be fine if you were a couple, and then you just chose the gas powered car for long road trips. I can do Boca to charlotte in one day without much trouble. That is a good 10-11 hours or about 600 miles. Do you know how much extra time that would add? I think I do about 300 miles per tank. It is right around ten gallons for a fill up, and that may take 15 minutes if I am taking a shit.

I do stop often for snacks, restrooms, and drinks to keep me awake and alert. but taking that much time at a rest stop every 180 miles would cause boredom and that leads to restlessness and poor driving. Locally I would not give a fuck, but I need my car to do the long trip without being a Pain in the Ass.

That is why I love My corolla. I have no problem with the economical 4, a bunch of decent features, and some good reliability. It is too soon to go EV for me.

If you leave with a full battery, that’s two 18-minute stops and a 2-minute snack break (or without, if you don’t mind arriving on fumes… er… so to speak) in an Ioniq 5.

Alternatively, the fastest charging speed is from 25-55% so (math omitted) you can also take a 5.7 minute stop after 192 miles and then every 77 miles (5 stops total) for a total of 28.5 minutes charging, or go down to 10% and use one stop to get food and do an 18 minute charge, and leaving only 2 5.7-minute breaks for a total of 29.4 minutes. Assuming a 15 minute long stop and a 3 minute short stop in a Corolla, that’s less than a 12-minute difference.

No question that charge speed is super important. I definitely can’t recommend a Bolt for long road trips. It’s the primary reason I haven’t bought one. But an Ioniq 5 or EV6 are sorely tempting, assuming your road trips have the fast EV chargers to support them.

edit: math is easy, counting is hard.

They will get better. They should start incorporating other methods of charging. At least during the day you could use some solar generation. Wouldn't it actually be more efficient to use gas powered electrical generation? If you could have one battery unit charging via other methods whole the first was being used up you could extend the distance by filling up a generator if you were doing a long trip, and maybe driving during the fay to absorb some solar charging. Then you could use it as needed. Then you would only need to buy gas if you were going on a long road trip.

If you were to make some regulations you might make it so you could be doing battery packs that could simply be swapped at a recharging station. Then the station itself could stage the charged packs using solar and other cleaner energies.

Da fuq you talking about? The issue with hydrogen isn't how "safe" it is (for all kinds of technical reasons I won't go into, hydrogen is safer than gasoline), but storage. If you want a hydrogen-powered car to have the same kind of range and performance as a fossil fuel-powered car, you have to work out how to keep a shitload of the stuff very cold, and under very high pressure. And you have to make sure that it doesn't blow up during an accident, even if there's nothing to cause a spark, because when you have a large amount of even an inert gas, like helium, under lots of pressure, and you rupture the storage vessel, folks are going to have a very bad day.

Congrats you’ve reinvented the plug-in hybrid (with a solar roof).

Absolutely. The economics still have to be sussed out, as do the physical logistics - currently battery packs are very hard to remove — but that definitely feels like the future.
