I think with the fashion stuff there's a sort of Andy Kaufman-style trolling happening there. He's spoken of his admiration for Kaufman before. Making hipsters dig through trash bags at the Gap to find overpriced hoodies feels like performance art, just like convincing them to wear what appears to be melted soft serve on their feet.

It looks a lot like what you would see 80's movies saying people in 2020 would wear. Kanye was always an overrated sampler as far as I ever saw. Not that cool things do not come out of sampling and covers, but he was never very impressive compared to other people doing it IMO.

I think you are correct that there is a huge disrespect for his audience, and an egotistical over-appreciation for his own "genius" that drives his attempts to grift his followers. I think most white lefties have trouble responding to bigotry when it comes from a member of that same group. There's that "are they allowed to say that?
