    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hei...tes#Electoral_success_as_a_function_of_height it’s an urban legend. There’s an advantage, but it’s 2:1 (since 1900) not 46:0

I feel like right now DeSantis has a better shot at the nomination than Trump.

Republicans fell in line behind Trump because they wanted power more than they care about any morals, and because they were scared of the backlash from his supporters on the right if they didn't.

Once there's another serious far right alternative, that "with him or against him" call loses a lot of strength, and many can say they liked Trump, and he had his turn, but it's time for a new candidate who can also run for more terms if elected.

I'm not so sure, but I sure hope so.

B/c there is a significant number of Trumpites that care about him far more than the party. Hell, he'd probably see it as a betrayal and run as an independent, just so he could continue the grift.

And all these evangelical churches that believe he is divinely appointed by God will follow him, along with the Qcumbers and the anti-establishment types.

That's a significant portion if not an outright majority of the GOP at this stage.

They created this monster. It's going to eat them. Let's hope they kill each other off and something sane can emerge later on.

The big problem with that is that whilst Trump has a certain likeability for his worshippers, DeSantis is a complete and utter asshole, not to mention a coward lacking in charisma. Sort of a male Liz Truss... After Trump won I'm well past saying anyone person doesn't have a chance, but DeSantis strikes me as the latest bright, shiny object for both the mainstream media and the right-wing echo chamber. You may feel free to print this out and wave it under my nose when DeSantis is inaugurated... :ramen:

Whether or not Trump is nominated depends on how many challengers run. He never won a majority at all in 2016, there were just enough others splitting the vote to let him gain a plurality.

If Republicans really want rid of him they should pressure bozos like Pompeo to stand down. Run 2, maybe 3 relatively diverse challengers (say, Desantis, Haley, and Hawley for example) and be sure all of them know if they don't blow up early they are obliged to fuck off.

Trump won a majority in every primary after Wisconsin, starting with New York (plus an earlier 73% in the Northern Mariana Islands), and got 49% in Massachusetts.

was that after the field thinned though? I'm too lazy to look it up but WI isn't really an early state.

But me comment was misphrased - the idea was that of all primary votes cast he didn't get a "50%+1" majority.
(but I didn't do that math myself, in theory I may have been lied to)

No, it was perfectly clear, just not true. It's fair to say that he didn't get a majority in any of the early primaries (though he got very, very close in MA) except the Northern Mariana Islands, but Cruz and Kasich were still well in it when he started winning majorities.

It is good to see that the dems have missed their mark and are pretending the finally got him that he will be free to run again. It is great they convicted the trump organization, but no one convicted him and I am looking at the FBI and the special counsel who should be eliminating this problem by throwing him in prison.

But that was where I was going with it - if they keep his number of opponents down (which I went on to say) they have a shot at stopping him, if not they don't.

A three man field is a much different animal than a - what was it, 12, 13 candidates early on?

Happened across this article in The Economist that says 2/3rds of the winning candidates have been taller since 1900. That's when I went to check the Wiki article you linked to and noticed that they used Trump's 6'3" claim, which is demonstrably false.

Nobody really expects Dianne Feinstein to run for re-election, but she hasn't made any announcements, so basically there's an underground primary between -- so far -- Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, Barbara Lee, and Ro Khanna.

    Politico story: https://www.politico.com/news/2023/...es-senate-run-as-feinstein-stays-mum-00076832

Adam Schiff and Katie Porter probably have the highest national profiles -- Schiff because of his prominence in the Trump impeachment, and Porter because even people who don't know anything else about her know that she's "the whiteboard lady."

At first glance -- and based on what I've observed from following a lot of 2020 Harris and Warren fans on Twitter -- I think the factions will break down in a similar way to the 2020 presidential primaries:

#KHive (Harris supporters) -> Barbara Lee
    Warren Democrats -> Katie Porter
    Bernie Brigades -> Ro Khanna

Not sure where Schiff falls in all this, but if you find a #KHive person who strongly dislikes Warren, it seems like that person probably feels the same way about Porter. And Khanna has always been pretty firmly in the Sanders camp.

If DiFi stroked out tonight, it would be a very fine thing to appoint Lee to finish the term, she deserves it. But she's also quite old.

As a Warren stan and a Porter fan, I could easily support Khanna - I could support Ted Lieu if he ran. Have no particular beef with Schiff except he's not Porter.

Just, dear lord, no one get the temptation to inject London Breed into any of this. What a disappointment she's been.

It’d be nice to have someone like Khanna who actually understands tech in the Senate. He hasn’t been so great lately though. Barbara Lee is how old? 76? On the other hand having “new” Senators every few years would be nice, but so would having someone born in the last quarter of the 20th century. Katie Porter is good in the House. There’s a chance that her edifying isn’t entirely wasted there, while I’m not sure it matters nearly so much in the Senate. Schiff I don’t really care about one way or the other.

But I think it’s probably moot cause Feinstein will run again, win, die in office, and be replaced by whoever is SecState at the time, probably Shirley Weber. That’s the problem. I don’t think any of them, especially not Khanna or Schiff, can beat DiFi.

What is it with Democrats wanting senile people in government, Feinstein is reportedly not able to remember people she's known for years, refuses to retire, RBG was on her death bed making decisions on the Supreme court, refused to retire, Fetterwoman can barely string sentences together, Biden stumbles over his words, holy shit.

Meanwhile in the House 22 of the Congressmen have no further education than a GED. They didn't even make it out of high school. But then, stupid is as stupid does. And then there's all the criminals. And now Santos, the perfect Republican, the quintessential deplorable, sociopathic liar who is wanted for fraud in Brazil.

I'll take Fetterman and Biden over that any day. But then, I'm not an idiot, so idiots aren't my heroes. LOL.

    Hmm, let's see.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg: No evidence of any cognitive decline; cancer killed her.
    Joe Biden: Lifelong stutterer.
John Fetterman (and by the way, stuff like "Fetterwoman" is why people make jokes about you being 14 years old): Recovering from a stroke.

The only person on that list who's probably senile is Feinstein.

He called himself Fetterwoman, fair game. If he's recovering from a stroke, he doesn't need to be in the senate.

I gotta ask, do you actually understand what a stroke is? Because you seem to be conflating a temporary loss of communication ability with a loss of cognitive function.

This is like saying Marlee Matlin shouldn't be able to serve in the Senate because she has trouble speaking.
