Don't know if there's a thread yet, but couldn't find one...

ANyways, the next Pixar movie, Turning Red is set in Toronto. Cool enough, right?

But then I see the trailer and...

If she turns into a fox when she's upset

And she's not a fox all the time

Then she must not be a Maple Leafs fan

I'm reasonably certain that she turns into a red panda, not a fox.

This is a good one to see, and a great one for the kids. It is woke as fuck so those with little minds need to be warned it will turn you into a gay fairy woman if you watch it. So don't see it because it has evil things like compassion, understanding, and liking people who do good things. There is no jesus in it and they have the nerve to have some asian theologies so you will go to hell the moment you enjoy this adorable medd of wholesome goodness and fun.

Of course this happens in tyhe imaginary world of Toronto Canadie where people are nice and get along and appreciate each other. Imagine something that is not america or europe. Who would have guessed there would be other types of people.

they mess with the geography a bit. I'm not quite clear on which school she went to, as there aren't any built to that style nearby. The family home/temple could have been the one on College Street, but given her rooftop route appears to be on Dundas. That dentist's sign is there, as is the wiggle in the road/streetcar track.

I did not see the shapeshifting connecting with menstruation a lot from a logical perspective, but that may have been an emotional thing with cis women. There was the initial confusion which would have connected, but her friends would have all been preparing or going through the same change in my perceoption. In that I could be wrong as girls may see themselves going through it very alone.

I did see it relatable to the GLBT community more today because you might find more support in your friends than your family when that secret comes out. But then that is not hereditary and passed down at all.

The messages about growing up and how she resolved her conflicts with her bullies by inclusionm rather than terrorizing them were pretty good. I listened to a few adult critics on it who found the beginning annoying, and I found that to be wrong. This is targetted towards kids, and what is annoying to an adult could resonate with a child that age. Being a person who enjoys more child related animation I did not find it to range into the particularly grating area, but I could see it is not a movie I could see adults watching on their own like a lion king or aladin.

I did like the use of animation emotional facial expression more in the CGI animation. I think that is is a visual way to express the thoughts in a character's head, and I think Pixar utilized it a lot more which may turn some people off. I like that they used a recognizable landscape rather than a generic town. I was glad to see an incorporation of non-christian european symbols in it. Yay, she did not turn into a wolf, or even a cat. It was more culturally iconic, and not american whites at all while still being able to be enjoyed by american whites. It did not beat that to death either.

While I find it annoying that they mess with the geography a bit, paying attention to and including those details grounds the setting so well

(The geographic liberties taken in The Hunted [2003] with Portland make me want to borrow @Lanzman's asteroid attractor ray though :brood:)

I kind of saw Mei choosing to keep "the power" (or whatever they called it) as analogous to deciding to delay puberty, to surrender it would've meant committing to mundane womanhood before she was sure.

another bit of inclusion that's barely noticed or mentioned is there's at least one kid shown to have an insulin patch. More a detail than anything... but guaranteed every diabetic kid who saw it felt a little better about themselves.

the kids playing basketball in the laneway she's jumping over should be a bunch of middle aged punk rockers drinking beer, but they got the multiple levels of decaying pavement correct, right down to the storm sewer.

I thought it might be her deciding not to take the pill which would have caused her to have more symptoms of the menstrual cycle. Maybe something like having an IUD. However, that would be something more female perspective so I cannot say.

yeah... end of the day though, I found it a positive reinforcer for young'uns that they can be who/what they choose

Gonna be working at a friend's place today who was a TA at Sheridan while Domee Shi was a student... Might turn conversations to his experiences with her.
