It's astonishing how Disney has ruined this franchise even more than Lucas managed to do with the prequels :jayzus:

So that means there isn't even milk dust coming out of the star wars movie nipples anymore? Maybe they need to make a movie about baby yoda? Something kids related that everyone will love.

Or maybe they could give the franchise a fucking rest for a week or two?

    In your opinion.

I think Disney has done a better job than Lucas, recognizing the original holy trilogy will never be matched, anyway.

The first two sequel films (The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi) were pretty decent. TFA was derivative but enjoyable. The Last Jedi tried to do things a bit differently and the fanboys went absolutely apeshit. As a result, we got the Frankenstein abortion that was The Rise of Skywalker, which tried to appease fans by retconning everything from TLJ but just ended up making a big mess.

Rogue One is among the best films of the franchise.

The streaming shows have a pretty good track record and are generally well-received, in particular The Mandalorian and Andor.

The animated stuff (which started under Lucas but continued with Disney) also gets good reviews.

So I'd say Disney is doing a pretty good job. Problem is, it doesn't appear they have a gameplan. Or when they do have a gameplan, they completely change it.

They've been cowardly and reactionary like Warner Brothers with DC.
They need a Kevin Feige/James Gunn to make gutsy choices, and stick to them.
Ideally, that would be Dave Filoni, but he doesn't seem to want the big chair, and is happy to hide in the Mando-verse/animated-verse.

    Agreed on Rogue One.

Disney should have adapted the Thrawn Trilogy, though. Could have possibly even used some of the TFA characters as stand ins for Han/Leia/Luke and reworked their roles.

I don't know why Solo gets all the hate either, it's a perfectly decent Star Wars movie - not the best but certainly not the worst

There does need to be a new trilogy though I think, something that doesn't involve the Empire vs Rebels but still has great Jedi shit

I think they're trying to build out the pre-prequel era with "The Acolyte" to eventually put movies in.
But there's that cowardice again, acting like it's a hot bath, and they have to ease us into it.
    Just fucking do it.

There's still a lot of story to tell in the 60+/- years of "Skywalker era". But, when it's all done, there will be a whole new set of story to tell about the "Grogu era". Will he be Mandalorian? Will he wield the dark saber? Will he form a new religion out of the ashes of the old Jedi?

    Agreed.

For me, it's still ESB as the best Star Wars film, but Rogue One is right up next to it. As far as I'm concerned, the plot, the pacing, the characters, the payoff, it's all terrific, grade A+ effort from everyone involved.

    Was never going to happen.

    * They'd have to pay royalties to Zahn
    * Nerds would kill them over every major casting announcement or publicity shot THAT'S NOT HOW TALON KARRDE LOOKS
    * Nerds would kill them over every eensy change they made to the plot
    * Did I mention the royalties? Royalties are MONEY. That's money they don't have any more, not even in a shell company, because they had to give it to some loser outside the movie industry
    * Nerds would immediately start screaming to film all their other favorite trilogies and one-offs and comics and short story collections *right now* why isn't it *happening yet* Disney has no clue how to run this franchise
    * Why will anyone under the age of 30 get excited to watch "new" SW that's based on musty old novels? Ones that were written even before the PT came out?
    * Seriously, give movie levels of money to some tie-in author for writing books in a movie universe that belongs to Disney anyway? Even those losers over at Paramount were never buying the movie rights to their space nerd fanfiction
    * Nerds would immediately start screaming to not film their hated trilogies, one-offs, comics, and short story collections did you hear that rumor they're going to skip straight to the Corellian trilogy Disney is destroying this franchise
    * Zahn has been less than fully silent about other people not writing "his" characters well, imagine if he complains about the movie, it could cost Disney millions or even just thousands
    * Why pay money for a proven story that people like when Disney could just have their own preferred scriptwriters put together a script that people may or may not like, now that's how Hollywood is supposed to work

The feeling is probably still "but we didn't need this, we like Han better without a definitive origin story"

Give it 20 years and the next generation will boost the movie's reputation

Derivative but enjoyable describes TFA pretty well.

TLJ just wowed me in the theater. It has its flaws, but I appreciated what they were trying to do.

If you just take TRoS as a dumb popcorn flick it's very entertaining.

I don't much care that they don't fit together very well because 1: the novels are my personal canon anyway and 2: ST II-IV don't fit together in mood, they were just made up as TPTB went along, and they're still my favorite Trek movies anyway so

Most of this probably applies to Harry Potter, and yet even with the TERF shit I doubt they regret paying J.K. for the rights.

Also, to be fair, except for Stackpole, the other authors didn't write Zahn's characters well, and Mara Jade wound up a Mary Sue (if she already wasn't one by definition). I can reread Outbound Flight, Allegiance, Choices of One, and the Thrawn Trilogy with glee. I can reread Survivor's Quest fairly well. The Hand of Thrawn duo is a slog because of him trying to put his characters back on rails and dealing with their Mary Sue enhancements from the other authors.

There are several books of his I missed because Powell's never seemed to have them. Maybe I'll take a looksee one of these days.

Big difference: Harry Potter (at the time) was not an established film franchise like Star Wars was.

    Okay, so here's the movies!

Movie 1, the James Mangold directed one will be 25,000 years before ANH, and be about the very first Jedi.

Movie 2, Dave Filoni directing, post-ROTJ in the Mando-verse timeline, and will unify all the shows.

Movie 3, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's movie will be 15 years after TROS, and be Rey rebuilding the Jedi order. Daisy Ridley will of course reprise the role.
