Republican Senator Blocks Military Promotions Over Abortion Policy
Senator Tommy Tuberville is holding up scores of Defense Department appointments in protest of a new Pentagon policy to ensure that military personnel can obtain abortions after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

WASHINGTON — A Republican senator has single-handedly held up promotions for the military’s senior commanders at least through mid-April as he attempts to pressure the Pentagon to change a new abortion policy created to ensure access to abortions for service members after the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The weekslong push by Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, which is threatening to drag on into its third month after the senators left town on Thursday for a two-week holiday recess without resolving the matter, has prompted the first major clash of the new Congress over abortion access in the wake of the Supreme Court decision last year overturning abortion rights.

The Republican-led House passed a measure in January that would lay out criminal penalties for abortion doctors in some cases, but Democrats in the Senate, who control that chamber, have no intention of allowing the bill to be considered. Mr. Tuberville’s move, by contrast, has forced a debate on abortion access to the forefront of the Senate agenda.

Mr. Tuberville, a right-wing freshman, began blocking the promotions of generals and admirals across the services in mid-February, after the Pentagon announced it would give U.S. service members up to 21 days of leave for abortions or fertility treatments and reimburse travel and transportation costs incurred while obtaining such treatments.

The protracted impasse has left Democrats and some Republicans wringing their hands over the potential national security repercussions of leaving the senior ranks of the military susceptible to depletion by attrition until the Pentagon either capitulates to Mr. Tuberville’s demands, or he is convinced to relent.

“It may not be his intent, but he is effectively accomplishing what our adversaries could only dream of: denying our military of its leadership and degrading our ability to fight and win the nation’s wars,” Senator Jack Reed, Democrat of Rhode Island and the Armed Services Committee chairman, said during a floor speech this week. He accused Mr. Tuberville of a “profound assault on the professionalism of the men and women of the armed services.”

“Military promotions are not a political matter and they are not toys for political gains,” Mr. Reed added.

This would be an excellent opportunity to at least reform the filibuster. Forget all those namby-pamby democracy policies, the Democrats have the opportunity to take a stand against the filibuster on national defense grounds. They can probably reform it over this without taking any hit with voters. This isn't about abortion, this is about keeping the military leadership well-staffed. At the very least they can least get rid of single-Senator holds and silent filibusters. If Tuberville knows this, he's going to drop this now that it's in the news cycle, so he has something to point to for reelection before the Democrats can make hay. If he doesn't, he's about to learn the difference between strategy and tactics in a way most football coaches don't have to.

Agree but also - greatly reforming or removing the filibuster altogether won't even register with the voters. No one who's persuadable to vote Dem will be lost if it simply disappears.

Hell, get rid of all single senator bullshit (the blue slip custom for example)

I don't agree with that at all. Might not be a lot, but the voters on the margins matter.

    Indeed.

First, I am pretty sure they do not cut off the cat's head. If you took your cat in to get declawed and they cut off the cat's head you might want to sue the vet or at least report it to the licensing people.

Second, you never met my mom's old calico. Once the bleeding stopped you would be all for declawing that cat. Some cats need declawing. Not all cats do, but when the choice is between putting it down because it is psycho and claws everyone (but not the furniture), and declawing it so it can live the rest of it's pampered indoor life in peace, you declaw the fucker. The cat had multiple personalities and if you did not see the switch you would pull back a bloody stump, or have the cat clinging to your back or leg tearing into it for no reason.

Yes, but what about the medicl freedom of men to deny women treatment for their female troubles.

I think that we should outlaw testosterone treatments for cis men just to make sure people are operating as god intended. I don't want some low T asshole being a gender it isn't and pretending to be a man when they clearly are not.

If you ever find someone who will say it is their honest opinion that "There can be no reasonable restrictions on bodily autonomy" then let me know.

The question of what constitutes "reasonable" is almost always going to be debatable.

Some people may reasonably think that requiring people to wear a mask to prevent the spread of a potentially lethal virus is reasonable in general, while others might think that it is never reasonable, while others might fall in between.

The differences with the underlying issues of abortion and Covid may mean that people who fit in one camp as to the right of the government to mandate mask wearing might fit in another when it comes to the right to terminate a pregnancy and still be reasonable.

I would imagine that there are a lot of people who think that the government does not have (or should not use) the power to force people to wear masks or to enforce lockdowns or any number of things and yet does (and should use) have the power to ban abortions. And a lot of people who think the government does have (and should use) the power to force people to wear masks and does not have (or should not use) the power to ban a wide variety of abortions.
