Point of order: The only confirmation of this was Gaetz’s own lawyers (who’ve said this before), DOJ doesn’t comment on such things. Additionally, we’ve heard nothing indicating that they’ve dropped all investigations into him. Not saying that it’s impossible he’ll walk, just that this information may be suspect.

It could be that he’s completely innocent, but people went ahead and judged him in the court of public opinion and found him guilty already because someone on Twitter said so, so it must be true.

Meanwhile, the receipts for payments from Gaetz to the people involved and are available to view on the web. Gaetz asked for a pardon, not for the investigation to be dropped, but a pardon. Totes the kind of thing that an innocent person would do.

And consider this: If you have two crimes you could charge someone with, both charges have an equal chance of sticking, and similar sentence lengths. One is for violating the Mann Act, and the other is for attempting to overthrow the US government via violent means. The Statute of Limitations clock is ticking on both crimes. Attempting to try the person with both crimes at the same time could be a legal nightmare (multiple trials, all of which will be media circus events, then there's the issues of evidence, witnesses, etc.) and no matter how strong your cases might be, you run the risk of confusing the juries with the complexities of interlocking cases, not to mention you'll have to sequester the juries if the cases are tried at the same time (or nearly the same time).

An easy way to deal with this is to focus on the crimes that will have the largest social impact, and ignore the others. Jailing someone who attempted to violently overthrow the US government seems to me to be the priority one should have in such a situation.

Now, I'm not saying that this is what's going to happen, just that I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen. Unlike some people, I've not so totally given up on America that I think the wealthy and powerful will always go free. More times than they should, they get to go free, but even so, some of them act so egregiously that they wind up in jail. See Leona Helmsley and James Trafficant for examples of wealthy and powerful folks who defied expectations and wound up in prison.

House Ethics committee just reopened their investigation into Gaetz for sexual misconduct with a minor.

What's more, they are extending it to: The committee will investigate whether Gaetz “engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift, in violation of House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct."

McCarthy isn't pleased with Gaetz and the Freedom Caucus revolt against the speakership.
