Sorta. I know what you're thinking: I fucking hate reboots! It was a pretty shitty show that only old people liked, so why should we care? And, of course, to update it, they gave the role of Matlock to a woman. However, a few seconds into the trailer, we realize that things are a bit meta. For starters, while it's obvious that they're trading on the name and the concept of the original series (Kathy Bates has a Southern drawl, for starters), it takes place in a universe where everyone knows the TV series. Oh, and even if you have no intention of watching the series, you'll want to watch until the end of the trailer, as it hits you with a punch that Andy Griffith never would have allowed on the original.
The thing about Matlock, is it let all the baby-boom has-beens pop up as guest stars. Gen-x is old enough for us to have our celebs be has-been guest stars on a Matlock re-incarnation. Weep now.
Looks like a good premise but, yeah, it's weird that they use the name. Of course, using the name to trade on goodwill from the old show is the kind of skillful manipulation the.character is shown to use in the trailer.
Never watched the original but am curious enough based on the trailer to watch Kathy Bates do her thing for at least a couple episodes before old dog teaches young pups new tricks gets old.
I'll allow it since there's no actual connection to the Matlock in the older show - but in passing I will note that one of the most annoying tropes in network TV is the bit about "remember this dude you liked back in the day? We'll here's a show about his daughter!" There's probably a page on this on that trope website.
