I'm glad AES won, not just because he seems like a genuinely progressive guy, but because the Stevens campaign was just outright bragging about the $60+ million spent to prop her up as if that was something to be proud of. Like @Lanzman points out, younger folks are tired of the corporate shitstains, and spending a fuck ton of money so large that it would feed every homeless person in the state shouldn't be a bragging point but a mark of shame. Hell, even if I wouldn't have particularly wanted AES, I'd have voted for him on principle just to let the Stevens campaign know that my vote isn't so easily bought.
I dunno about elsewhere, but here in FL every primary I see is Republicans sniping at each other over who's a "real" Republican. "So-and-so is a RINO who backed Never-Trumpers!" My favorite was the ad that says "So-and-so moved here two years ago from NEW YORRRRK!", with a black and white photo of Mamdani
American political ads from what I've seen are insane . Like the kind of political ads you'd expect to see in dystopian future sci fi B movie Up here our political ads are basically a person who introduces themselves, says a bit about what they like and then goes "vote for me, would appreciate it eh"
This is my worry. I don’t like it when the Senate candidate in Michigan is trailing ones in Texas and Iowa because I’ve been burned by polling in Texas and Iowa recently. The fact El-Sayed missed his polling by 12 points! is concerning to say the least.
Probably has something to do with the fact that your contributions are more strictly limited (if I understand correctly) and the insane "Citizen's United" SCOTUS ruling that allowed corporate contributions and the SuperPacs that don't seem to exist up there either. SuperPacs are responsible for a lot of the whacko ads and since they are "dark money" they give a candidate plausible deniability for negative ads.

Was interacting with a "friend of a friend" on Facebook who was mad about him wiunning and voicing full confidence Rogers would curb-stomp him. My reply was that this isn't that kind of election. This, like the last one and the next one, is a "voters demand change! ANY change!" election - which is how we got Trump back. The candidate with the handicap is the one who looks very much like the same old tired two-party suit. Which Rogers has in spades. I think if Sayed can overcome being outspent 9-1, he can beat Rogers.
Living here, I would be extremely cautions about reading anything into the primary turnout. Stevens vs. El Sayed was the only race that anyone was really paying attention to. Mike Rogers was unopposed in the Republican Senate primary, and the Republican primary for governor was between a well-known nutcase who had Trump's endorsement — thus checking the two boxes the Republican base cares most about — and a guy who nobody had ever heard of. The bigger cause for hope is that Michigan actually is more of a blue state than a purple one. The results in 2016 and 2024 had more to do with us having a good-sized population of the kind of low-information, low-propensity voters who adore Trump but can't be bothered to turn out for anyone else.
Whether it’s a calculated political move (pivot to center for general) or sincerely held belief great answer by AES. The thing is is that this line of thinking is just a return to the dominant political thought of the nation from the New Deal up until Reagan. Far from radical it’s simply a return to traditional American political-economic thought!
I have an important question: With all the talk about Stevens vs. El-Sayed, why is everyone glossing over the fact that Malory Stevens is clearly some sort of goblin? We've got an ogre already in the senate, the Secretary of Health and Human Services is clearly a Fallout ghoul, and now we almost let a goblin be a senate candidate. We're being invaded by The Land of Make-Believe and everyone's just ignoring it!
