Yes! That rock solid NT file system. When Windows XP came out, I was resistant at first because they required user telemetry, it was the first major foray for Microsoft into the whole bullshit they do now. I eventually used Windows XP when SP2 came out, and found it a stable experience, but Windows 98SE was still the most fun for me. The Windows Plus! pack was so cool.

Microsoft is pushing the latest updates to their AI shit to Windows 11 machines that use Qualcomm chips. AMD and intel based machines are getting it later. So if you gotta run Windows 11 and want to avoid the AI shit as long as possible, don’t get a Qualcomm based machine.

True, but iOS is even worse.

iOS is bad, but Windows still holds the trophy because of its total hostility for users.

To anyone who thought Recall was going away, all I can say is:

"And now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb."

That groan you hear is users’ reaction to Recall going back into Windows

I remember when Microsoft made software to address the needs of their users. Nowadays, they're like Apple in that "this is what you get, you'll pay for it, and you'll like it or you get nothing" is the order of the day.

A former M$ exec has apparently announced that he's ditched Windows for Linux "and has never been happier."

A lot of people are tired of Microsoft's bullshit. Not enough, unfortunately, to make them change their tactics, but quite a few people have switched to Linux and Mac OS because Windows has just become utter trash. The people who have no choice to use it because of proprietary software that refuses to work with anything else are stuck, but other people either want to remain on Windows 10, or want to move on.

“Become”? WinDoze has always been trash. Blue screens of death, endless bugs, constantly changing layouts . . . No thanks. As I’ve said many times, WinDoze is for when you want to work on your computer. Apple is for when you want to do work with your computer.

Windows 7 definitely had some moments, especially being the successor to Windows Vista.

Every IT guy I've talked to thinks this is the most tone deaf move they could make. Imagine working in a corporate environment with hundreds of voices and trying to get any work done whatsoever, and of course that doesn't even factor in Microsoft recording your sensitive business conversations. It's like they want people to stop using Windows.

It's like that article Tucker posted about "the enshittification of the internet" where somewhere along the way, tech companies decided their relationship to their customers was 100% adversarial.
Every choice now is "oh, you hate this!!?? Here it comes, fucker!!".

Word to autosave new docs to the cloud before you can even hit Ctrl+S

Not mentioned in the article is if the stuff being saved to OneDrive is being scraped for AI training purposes (I'd be willing to bet it is). Something else to think about: A writer claims that they were permanently locked out of their Google accounts after Google's systems scanned a text document that they had just saved to Google Docs and decided that it was related to terrorism. (Writer was working on a piece of fiction that contained something that triggered those systems.) The writer had locally stored backups, so they weren't out a significant amount of work, but still, it's frustrating to suddenly have to swap everything over to an entirely different system with no advance notice.
