No, the ugly underside has always been there, but it came out into the light of day and got to play around for a while. I saw that many people just wanted things to go back to normal, to essentially ignore that aspect of the board, in an attempt to self-moderate, something which the board doesn't do nearly as well as it did. I saw that no matter what I would do in the future, it wouldn't be enough to fix anything, because it does require trust. In this case, I don't trust the board to oust the elements that so readily dug into hatred and bigotry. For several days it was like the Red Hour here, and people seemed okay with it when it was all over, wanting things to just go back to whatever new normal they've accepted. I do not accept it, so I chose not to stay in a position where my skill could be used to further that. I chose to step down for my own soul, not for others.
Are you equating anyone who disagreed with your take on this affair as being a purveyor of hate and bigotry?
@John has put in a lot of his time and a huge amount of effort in terms of the operation of this board for nothing in return. It's downright selfish not to acknowledge what he's done for wordforge. Thanks for all your efforts @John - sorry things got a bit dicey at the end there.
Not at all. What I'm saying is that wanting things to feel normal again is entirely human, but we lose something every time we let something that is not normal continue to exist as long as we get that normalcy again. Things did not feel normal for me, and I realized that, so I knew I couldn't just go back to the way things were before. I gained new knowledge, and I chose to act on it rather than store it away, hidden.
This is Dinner you're talking to. If he spent half his time controlling his rage over god knows how many things he might be more inclined to employ objectivity.
Can you understand that some of us perceive your side to be the side of hatred and bigotry? If anything, the impropriety in our behavior is merely a reaction to the contempt, disdain and arrogance for us implicit in this very response of yours. Self reflect on that.
I vote for a The Flashlight/teh baba administration. WF has always mirrored the real world to a certain extent so go ahead. The people demand it
John you're pretty naive to think the vast majority of the board would not be against what you did. Beyond that it's foreseeable to expect different posters to react differently in protest. Some use logic. Some use emotion. Some hate spam. None of this should have been unexpected unless you were a noob to WF.
Anna, I'm kinda sad in some ways to see you step down. I'd actually kinda hoped when you became and admin that you'd have a kind of mitigating effect on the others, but I guess it actually kind of worked the other way around. :/ But, out of all of them, you were the first to admit that you guys fucked up and seemed the most conciliatory out of all of them, so that's worth something. I just wished this had somehow translated into undoing the things that you guys fucked up on (gturners ban and the existence of the VR). John, for what it's worth, I thought you did a good job in running the technical stuff on the board. I guess the upshot is that whole thing on power corrupting.
I appreciate that, thank you. Like I mentioned elsewhere, it pretty much started as mission creep. You come in to do one or two things, and you get asked to do something else, and hey, while you're here just handle this, and I can do this while you guys are asleep, and so on, until before you know it, you've got yourself involved in everything.
@John and @Anna, I'm sorry to see you both go. I know you always had the best interests of the board at heart. It's a thankless job, and I may not have always agreed with all of your decisions, but thank you nonetheless for your service. I do look forward to continuing to see you both around because you both make great contributions to the board even without the special admin utility belts. @The Exception, @Dr. Krieg: you poor sons of bitches. Get a Xanax prescription and a wine of the month club membership while you still can.
Don't read more in to it than is there, and cut it out with giving him the third degree for every decision he makes. That's part of why he is stepping down. He shouldn't be pushed in to continuing to defend himself, and nobody should feel entitled to demand answers from him. Give the man a break.
Very sorry to see both of you leave the staff, @Anna and @John. Thanks for your many troubles. Make sure to write your three letters, the new crowd will need them.
You should think about that the next time a bad decision is made and you cower away while leaving your volunteers to face the music.
Not quite the fallout I was expecting. Well I'm not surprised about John since it's some universal rule that the message board techie always gets shit on. And he waded pretty deep into the shit during our current problems. So thanks for handling the technical side of things. I know some of the problems that come up can be needlessly annoying and time consuming to correct. It's unfortunate that Anna stepped down. She might not have always been correct in her decisions but at least you could plainly see an earnest intent behind them. I hope she enjoys her return to a quieter role on the board. Good luck to Dr. Krieg. You'll need it.
Its unfortunate but not surprising. Would any of us really enjoy giving up our free time to deal with the rabble that happened lastweek? @Anna and @John , thanks for putting time and effort into this place.
