Caught it today during a break in my travels. I've never read the anime and didn't know any of the story or mythology going in, so the whole thing was totally new to me. The Good: Nice FX work, good blending of CGI and reality. The motion capture on the lead actress was exquisite. Lots of eye-watering fight scenes and chases. The Bad: Directed by Robert Rodriguez, I think this film would have benefited from an R-rating. There were several scenes where the 'gory finish' was cut away from at the final moment. Maybe less is more, but in light of everything else you saw, why not just go whole hog? ($- we know). The fight scenes were fantastic, but maybe too much so- they ended up looking somewhat cartoonish. A little 'less' would have been more in this case, for sure. The Ugly: Leaves you hanging a bit at the end, clearly expecting a sequel. Is there going to be one? The story isn't finished... Summary: Solid action fare, decently acted by the principals. Somebody please give Jennifer Connolly a cheeseburger. She used to look so much better when she had a little more weight on her and was less angular looking. Good visuals, solid storyline with no twists- just a solid action movie. It was fun! Recommend! 7.5/10
The gore was definitely one of the better aspects of the anime (haven't read the original manga yet. I am rather fond of the anime, but the shitty thing is that it was never finished, so it's like you only have two episodes out of a four episode OVA.
I will see it, but I was not really a fan of the anime so much. I wonder what a live action chobits would be like?
I liked it! I sort of knew what I was in for when I went. Rather fun, rather childish manga-inspired sci-fi action flick. Good action! Bloody awful acting! Cute girl! I was entertained throughout, but don't expect a masterpiece.
I loved it. It is now one of my top 5 favorite movies. Alita is of a character type that I love that is known on TVTropes website as a Mystical or Mysterious Waif. It is her search for her identity and growth as person is what I loved about the movie. My favorite scene is when she offers something of great value so that another person can achieve their dream.
I haven't read the manga yet, but the movie covered more or less what the anime did. I thought the casting was pretty good, but I couldn't help but wonder why they kept the huge-eyed, obviously CGI look for the main character. I kept kind of going between wishing they'd done everyone as practically as possible, or that they'd just done s straight-up CG movie since they were still going after the anime style. I liked it as a movie, and as an adaptation, but I can't help but wonder if people unfamiliar with the source material are going to be able to get into it. It does have a weakness in that it can be kind of hard to get invested in what's going on because there are so many characters and a lot of plot vying for attention, but it had a decent pace in spite of that. Another potential weakness was the way the writers connected things that I don't think really had to be connected. About the only case I thought that made an improvement was when Yugo realized what was happening with those parts he was stealing. I also like that they made the romance between him and Alita a little more two-sided, though I missed the backstory of what happened to his brother and caused him to be so obsessed with Zolem to begin with.
For those that have seen both, which recent flick did you find more entertaining? Alita, or Captain Marvel?
Just speaking for myself, I enjoyed both movies but didn’t feel compelled to watch Battle Angel a second time in the theater (I will pick up the DVD). I do want to see Captain Marvel a second time before Avengers but some of that is because it’s part of an ongoing saga. Battle Angel is (for now) just a stand-alone film, although a very impressive one. Battle Angel definitely wins in the VFX department. Also it’s one of the rare manga/anime to get a proper live action translation. I’m very hesitant and worried about the upcoming Robotech movie. Hope they don’t fuck that up.
Dude, it's the only example of a decent anime/manga adaptation, at least one made by Hollywood anyway.
They are talking about an Akira live action film. Already sounds like trash. They should leave those classics alone.
That's correct. Actually in a way Cameron did direct the first one. He was on set a lot working with Rodriguez. I think the way they did the first one is how they should go with the sequel. They seem afraid of Rodriguez because of The Book of Boba Fett.
