I was reminded today that this album has turned 40 years old. it may be one of the best examples of hardcore punk for the era, if not ever.
This video crossed my Instagram feed last month and I love it. I like re-genred songs like this, Postmodern Jukebox, etc. I typically don't like bluegrass music but will make an exception for bluegrass versions of heavy metal and hard rock songs.
That's also part of why I like them. They're smart to use a baritone sax for the bass line in most of their covers. IMHO it better mimics an electric bass than a tuba or sousaphone would (which is what most bands would use).
anyways... back to silver age punk. Back then everything was on small run vinyl, and usually in the "import" section of the one indy record store in town. Tape sharing was how pretty much everything got spread around when there were maybe two or three copies of a record among everyone. The 90 minute mixed tape that was my first real taste... Best of the west coast, 1983. (fronted by legendary statist, Joe Keithley) (tracks 4-6)
are you fucking kidding me? saw'em the first time in '83 at Larry's, here in Toronto. Caught the last tour of the band before DH died... not all that intrigued by Jello and the GSM though. (Door guys TSA'd me despite being on guest list) here's some fun stuff from before the days of "Mosh pit rules"..
No I’m not kidding you in regards to GNR. They started out being hardcore punk inspired and Appetite had a lot of punk influences. Nightrain in particular was very much punk influenced. Slash even cited Appetite as a reason why they broke up because of November Rain. He wanted to do more punk like stuff. Also New Rose and LA Guns also were more punk in 83-86 . The band was definitely initially punk. Or at least punk influenced.
that's adorable, but the video I posted here is what actually was punk. If you can't tell the difference between that and a Hanoi Rocks cover band, I don't know what to tell ya. anyways, 83-86 L.A.? here's D.I. and the legendary Circle Jerks.. (I was briefly called "Skank" when I lived in Calgary... never quite knew why?) fun fact, Keith's nearly 70
@Crosis36 kudos on the ANL reference... they were on the second mix tape back when. some modern era Latino HC from Toronto for ya. The singer is a coworker and if you ever make it here, this is one of the things we're going to.
