I recently tried to watch and get into Space: 1999. I just couldn't. I feel like if you missed this as a kid then you just missed the boat on this one. It's just not that interesting. It's a slog to get through an episode. It's got that 60s/70s pacing that's just aging worse and worse as time goes on. Like I used to really enjoy Lost In Space as a kid, but I actually can't make it through an entire episode now (unless it's just on in the background.) Space just doesn't have much going on in terms of characters and the scifi concepts it presents are so hopelessly dated that they're impossible to take seriously.
I can't remember if it was Asimov or Ellison who wrote about it, but both of them were at a presentation where they, and a bunch of other SF writers, were shown a pilot of a new TV series that was going to be "science first" and would be as revolutionary as 2001 had been. Though he never named the series, there were more than enough clues given in the description for you to know that it was Space:1999. IIRC, they both fled before the screening was over. A couple of years ago, I discovered that there was a Roku channel dedicated to one of Gerry Anderson's other shows, UFO. I tried watching a couple of episodes, but god, was it some stupid shit. The aliens were like the Vidiians from Voyager (and since UFO was done in the 60s, Voyager stole it from them) who have some kind of disease that they can't cure, but can treat by stealing organs from humans. I hope I don't have to explain why this is a really stupid idea. Anyway, I quickly realized that the only reason the show has fond memories for people is the fact that there's an awful lot of camel-toe in each episode. Otherwise, it's dumb as fuck.
