Religion has probably always been a mix of people with strong faith and people who just go along because it's the path of least resistance. When religion fails to keep up with modern values, it's no surprise that people in the latter group would start to abandon it entirely.

I was talking about that "empathy is a tool of Satan" article the other day with a colleague who could probably be described as part of the religious left. She's completely disgusted with what most churches have become, but her personal sense of faith is strong enough, and internally driven enough, that she'll find her own path within the faith even if the institutions completely fail. But a lot of people -- possibly even the majority -- aren't like that. If the institutions fall down, they'll just say "fuck that noise" and leave completely.
