No, the deterrent effect really does work on animals and it is the only thing that works on animals. Making sure they know they will be killed if they don't pretend to be humans works. Well, first of all, there are some major fallacies in your post. "Are you only opposed to justice when..." for instance. You seem to be trying to establish a framework where opposition to the death penalty equals opposition to justice, and that's not true. Second is the question "What if people have confessed so there is no doubt about guilt." In fact, a number of wrongful convictions have resulted from coerced confessions, especially when the suspect is mentally disabled.

But as for why I'm against it ... one reason is the possibility (and fact) of wrongful conviction. Another is that I'm not comfortable giving the state the power to kill people. It is very telling that so many conservatives are willing to give this major power to the state. It shows that they're really far more authoritarian than they want us to think.
