This released in the US a month ago, but I just got it now in the China cinema. I'm not big into horror, but this was one of of the most engaging movies I've seen in a while. And lots of room to explore the lore further, online after the fact. Check it out!
Between this and Iron Lung, there's been a few succe$$ful movies by YouTubers this year. If Hollywood decides that's a trend to jump onto . . .
Well, with Hollywood saturated with empty sequels and woke nonsense, independent creators have an opening to shine.
And young people who grow/grew up watching these people on YouTube who maybe find them a more attractive $15 movie ticket than some old fogey cast for some old franchise from previous generations. And in fact, Spielberg and several studios have bought the rights to something called Mandela Catalogue. And they're going to do the hopefully smart thing and let the creator direct.
Just saw it. Pretty impressive and original, although I thought the last 20 minutes or so were a bit of a letdown. Going to have to dig in to the online community and Youtube shorts. Very intriguing concept.
The Hollywood Way: "Wow, this independently made film is amazing! We're going to do a big screen version! Here's two hundred million dollars, guy who created it." Later, in the boardroom: "Okay, now that we own the IP, here's all the shit we have to change to make it work."
I watched Backrooms, and it was honestly one of the dullest movies I've ever seen. Who was even supposed to be the protagonist? Like all YouTube stuff, it is 100% style over substance
I’ve never seen the web series so it felt like a lot of questions were unanswered. That means Hollywood will squeeze it for a second and third movie. It was an original concept, but I was expecting more of a horror movie than weird fiction.
