Here lies the problem with the dems. When you have one party that is the deregulation party that wants to trade people and body parts for a little bit more corporate profit, the other side has to be the regulation party. You can't have the other party be the less deregulation party because the compromise goes down to horrific levels of corruption and no regulations. Biden has to be the republican that he is.

When you do not have that then you have massive deregulation and our safety and wellbeing take massive hits because most people don't care about regulations as long as it is other people dying.

This is why regulations really cannot be democratic. Regulations need to be fascist. They need to be fascist and applied by a group concerned with safety over profits. This voting for regulations thing is fucked. Even people who understand the need for regulations will often overlook them if they can. It is a huge area where democracy fails because people would rather roll the dice than make the effort to be safe. As a person who has had to be the safety asshole and QC person everyone is against you. Even the guy who hires you is often against you, and that is why you need to establish the rules and then be fascist about it because most people try to violate them and do the easy thing when they can, even when they know the consequences.

In the example we have for this thread people have been caught running the barricades to drive onto the broken bridge. That bridge collapsed like it was made of cards, and people still drove up onto that shit. We had installed netting to stop paintballs from hitting people so they could watch tournaments. We had to put signs on the netting telling people not to lift it up over them so they could watch the games. We also had to go around and argue with the people who thought the signs were not there for them. The people whop would sneak around and lift up the nets actually got mad and tried to sue the field because they got hit in the face with paintballs. They sued the fucking field because the field did not have enough people watching them to make sure they did not do this. I had to argue with these dumbasses.

You cannot vote on safety, and you have to enforce it better than the Nazis enforced the no jews thing.

Hmmmm I don't think I've ever "screamed" for cock.

But I wouldn't want to mess up a thread about a bridge on something that is so alien to me.

Can confirm - Long Beach, bitches

I find this much more egregious though:

How you can blame the secretary of transportation for a series of unprecedented global events that led to ports being backed up all over the world - not just LA - is beyond me. Like only a retard would think this. I would love to hear @Volpone 's explanation

So, folks, do you think that he’s *actually* going to put me on “Ignore”? (Pulls out fainting couch, dusts it quickly, covers it with a blanket, before dramatically collapsing on it.) Or is he lying about it like he has so many other times in the past when he’s threatened to do that to people?

    (And boy, I really nailed his last nerve, didn’t I? :D )

Going to be interesting to see if any new engineering insights or design changes come about from analyzing video of the bridge's destruction.

Not to imply that a stronger bridge would have stood up against the collision. But at the very least, whatever simulation models are used can be tested to see if they replicate the way the bridge fell apart.

I am just hoping no terrorists are going to gigantic boat helming school. This would not be the only bridge out there such a large ship could easily take out.

No need. That design is obsolete due to the nature of single fracture point failure affecting the whole bridge.

It does seem like there might be some way to hold stable for repairs, but I am not an engineer, so maybe it has to do that to maintain the stability that prevents the wave thing like this.

I would imagine the collapse point would be like dominoes when you take out a pilon like that on any bridge.

Thankfully the smartest man in the world has weighed in with the genius suggestion that a construction project be put out to bid to the private sector which will use stressed steel currently soaking in seawater to rebuild the bridge.

Who the fuck does he think builds literally everything for every level of government the Department of the Government Construction Company?!?!

The "new" Sunshine Skyway linking the Tampa and St. Petersburg sides of Tampa Bay was built to hold up if hit by a freighter at 10 knots. I think it's safe to say that's a big impact. They also have "dolphins" designed to take the hit from a wayward ship. I'm sure the new Key bridge will look somewhat different, but I'd bet there will be dolphins of some kind.

Yeah with the size of these post-PanaMax ships there is just no way to build something strong enough to sustain that kind of hit. You are basically asking for a nuke proof bridge. You keep running up the m of E = mc^2 and there is just nothing current materials can resist.

Diverting is the only realistic way forward either with dolphins or tugs there on standby (I can see ‘both’ being the end result).

The steel could actually be reused but it would have to be melted down and reforged the same as any recycled scrap steel.

So I’m going to this ‘Let’s paint my house and then have an orgy after’ kinda thing at a friend of friend’s place on Whidbey Island and these goat fuckers at Washington State Ferries decided to rebuild the Mukilteo ferry terminal about a half mile outside town so while waiting for a ferry you can’t just go to that steakhouse there downtown across from the waiting area.

I am anti-ferry at this moment in time.

The Issaquah doesn’t have a puzzle. Every ferry has to have at least one active puzzle. This trip is cursed. I’m going to get paint in my eye and a VD.

I don’t tape and cut for a living but when need be I still got it.

    IMG_1229.jpeg

For real one of the best experiences in my life was when ATARS fucked up and sent me to SWICS a couple months early and this old broke back SF E-8 waiting on a medical retirement was in charge of me and couple other Joes (narrowed down over time) on a construction detail.

We only worked a couple hours a day before he declared it was 1700 and time to go home but those of us he kept he taught a lot about drywall mudding and sanding and taping and cutting and painting and all that. I only served under that Old Salt for three months or so but it has stuck with me decades later.

If anything I think the engineers have learned that we should avoid crashing really big boats into bridges if possible.
