One of the very first things I remember about him, he posted in his diary at the TrekBBS about having to move into an apartment where there was a large Hispanic population. He wrote something about "Not wanting to live among such unpleasantaries". He also made several as in many posts where he did state that people from other countries and religions were lesser and that their deaths were less of an issue of those of Americans.
I seem to remember Dayton saying that American lives were more important to him, relatively, since he himself is also American, and not in some absolute sense. But I think the practical working out of that is the same either way. So it probably was a distinction without a difference.
I don't mind that, we all give a proximate value of life, just in most of us our Inside Outers either tipp-ex that bit out when handing the days report to sense of self, or are busy stuffing Exceptionalism into one of the wheeled cages Hannibal Lecter had in Silence. Dayton had no filters, so we were not only exposed to his antebellum-lite racism - telling black kids they were to be subservient - but we also got to see some of the icky bits that come with being human that our denial filters work overtime to keep out of sight.
Oh. No wonder he moved up into northern Arkansas. Joke was on him; north Arkansas is crawling with Hispanics.
The truest "cringe" is not that which we can't even remotely identify with, but the behavior that echoes something mortifying within ourself.
Damn, I'm super late to this party Uhhh....he gave us a lotta lulz, and I'm glad he lived long enough to see two queer Klingons in Star Trek, I guess I would say "may his memory be a blessing," but...
Damn. Wasn't he young? This sucks. Just for the record though... Dayton and Daystrom were different people. Right? Or was it the same guy? Damn. So he died of kidney failure at 58? Anybody know what happened? Was it a long illness like Tamar or did all this kick in after he left Wordforge?
Dayton and Daystrom were different people. He already had before he was banned from here. He mentioned a few times that he had some issues related to it, foot infections/problems, high blood pressure. Dialysis three times a week would indicate complete or near kidney failure. Dialysis is hard on the body, can strain the heart, lead to heart attack or heart failure along with general organ failure from urea and creatinine build up.
Dialysis is a miserable way to live. I knew of one kidney transplant patient from my high school days who had spelled out clearly to his mother that if the transplant failed he wasn't going back on dialysis. I don't know what his long term outcome was, but I have no doubt that his mother would have respected his wishes. Dialysis is a useful bridge for transplant candidates, but it's not something I'd ever wish on anyone.
Daystrom is a different dude. I think he's the guy that tried to meet... errr... I forget her name, a gal from TBBS 20+ years ago... anyway, he tried to meet her at the airport as she was getting ready to fly. I guess this had to be like 2000 or 2001 because it was when you could still walk up to a gate without having a ticket.
It is a monkey's paw. It helps keep you alive for a little while longer, but it takes so much in return.
I have a vet friend who has to get it 3 or 4 times a week from the VA. I drove him there to get his port put in. That was about two years ago. Every time I run into him, he looks a little worse.
Now that the shock has wore off… I think the thing that surprised me most was…. Dayton Kitchens was his real name?! I thought it was some reference to an obscure Star Trek character that I forgot, like “Tomalak’s Bathroom.” I’m not even kidding.
I wouldn't say shock, more like "finally?". Dayton Kitchens, Tomalak's Bathroom.... both were full of shit.
Having searched for him online in the past, I can attest that Google results will take you to quite a few Ohio home remodeling companies.
Nobody appears to have linked to this. All of the best material. http://wordforge.net/index.php?threads/dayton3-tracker-dayton-kitchen’s-greatest-hits.98559/
Quote in there about how he’s not worried about his wife and daughter after he dies because he’s not responsible for them at that point. What a swell guy.
