A phrase from the first children’s version I read had always stuck with me, “The gods reward bravery and courage, but punish pride.”

I hadn't planned on seeing this at the theater, but I think I'll try to do it.

Damn. Just looking at the last 3 or 4 posts, I’m interested. What movie are we talking about? Ooh, I love mythology. Excellent.

I've only seen a couple of reviews but....glowing isn't a strong enough word.

I wonder how much effect seeing it in not-IMAX will have?

The comment I saw was that it needs to be seen on a large screen, but you're not missing out if you don't see it in IMAX. I had similar feelings about Oppenheimer. And I saw that on one of the largest IMAX screens in the country.

I can't imagine that there will ever be a movie that will compel me to drive to Memphis just to see an IMAX film (I'm only assuming there even is one in Memphis)

3rd highest R rated opening weekend ever

Yet another example that this angry right wing Twitter thing is a tiny group of people that yell loudly and are amplified by bots and have very little real life influence

    Yep.
Which tells you everything you need to know about Piers Morgan that he actually put The Critical Drinker and Nerdrotic on his "show" to discuss the Odyssey.
You just know that none of those people have ever actually, you know, READ the Odyssey. Not Butcher and Lang's, and definitely NOT Wilson's. If they had, for instance, maybe they'd know that the King of Ethiopia brought an army to defend Troy after Hector's death.
And suddenly, Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy makes a lot of sense.

Saw it, loved it. May try to see it on an IMAX screen to see if it is a big difference. It's been decades since I read the Odyssey in high school so my recollection of it is not particularly detailed.

Re: Lupita, her Helen is on-screen for maybe 2-3 minutes, and she plays a dual role of Clytemnestra (who I did not remember is Helen's half-sister), which gives her another .5 minute. The reason no one complains about her playing Clytemnestra might be because they didn't bother to see the film to raise the complaint, or it might be because Helen is shorthand for beauty and in some people's minds, that has to be a blonde like most depictions of her have been.

    A couple things to nitpick:

I feel like the movie went out of its way to sanitize and/or forgive the acts of many of its characters. Circe gets to live even though she is a witch who has no real justification for her actions. Calypso roofied Odysseus for seven years and implicitly was boning him all that time. Odysseus led a bunch of rapists and pillagers and presumably engaged in some raping and pillaging himself in the 10 years of the Trojan War and the 10 years of its aftermath. I feel like the movie could have hit harder if it dwelled on these events a bit more.

I'd say that the film would give a competent version of the manosphere grist to complain about FEMINISM, and I don't love that. (Not that they wouldn't if the film didn't make some of the choices that it did, and not that they are likely to do an actual analysis of the film's content when they can just dogwhistle about blackity-black-black Helen and how it's a bigger insult when there aren't any actual Greek actors in the film's major roles but they went out of their way to cast a knee-gro.).

I think there was more telling than showing that Odysseus was smart.

The thing about Western Sahara is that it’s some of the most sparsely populated land in the world. So as far as occupation claims are concerned, it’s wayyy down the list.

My question is, who exactly is it a betrayal of? Who is the betrayer? Did Nolan previously pledge his support to the Western Saharans?

I mean... it sanitized a lot of Odysseus and his mens actions, but it also ends with the message that their sins in particular are what led to the end of the bronze age and a dark age lasting several hundred years. So... partial credit?
