by his own definition, "automatic" is sustained so long as the trigger is depressed.
"burst" fires two or three rounds per pull, therefore necessitating the trigger be pulled again after the first burst. If you just hold the trigger nothing will happen(yes?). Thus, not "sustained fire".

All I know is as a marine that was issued the M16 A2 , burst was an option that we never used because it would always jam. I served from 94 to 98 so I don't know what they are being issued now.

I have carried a three round burst M4, a full auto M4 and an M249 SAW (belt fed, 5.56mm, gas powered machine gun fired from the open bolt position [not being a dick, just not sure if they they had them in your day]).

I got my SAW about two weeks after being in Iraq. Once my unit (I was a replacement) realized I wasn’t an idiot and was a good shot.

However I had trained on it in Basic. You don’t want to burn ammo so even though it is a machine gun you want 3-5 round bursts.
