    * raises hand *

Yes, I do, with the caveat that they have to be ACTUALLY justified in doing so.

And in reality you almost never will be justified. The lines a cop would have to cross in order to justify you using deadly force to defend yourself from them is very difficult to achieve.

And you better have it on film and transmitting live to somewhere else to prevent the footage from going missing.

And yet all a cop has to do is claim they were "scared" of the kid with the toy or the adult with a cell phone. :brood:

Right. And this is a conflict for people who claim that popular gun ownership is a deterrent against tyrannical government. Resisting the government necessarily involves shooting at the police. No one condones that, least of all conservatives.

You're not resisting the government if you shoot at cops in 2018. You're just being a criminal.

When America becomes an actual tyrannical government than yes cops will be shot at. Along with the rest of the government.

So there is no conflict for people who claim that popular gun ownership is a deterrent against tyrannical government.

If you think America does have a tyrannical government than why aren't you shooting?

And how do you define that? It's vague. You yourself just said it's unrealistic.

    It's not vague.

no, displaying a gun is not the only way to deter crime. But just try to imagine if every cop in the US was unarmed. Sure 90 percent of the people detained or arrested would cooperate.
But the other 10 percent who would not cooperate (the nothing to lose type career criminals) are kept in check by the fact that the cop will surely nip in the bud any shenanigans would be some scary shit for the cops and the general public. And the thing about the seriously bad guys is they normally don't hang around long enough for the cops who do have guns to show up.
I realize some countries have special police teams who respond to situations where guns are required and I can't wrap my head around that. By the time you realize you are about to deal with a truly dangerous criminal they will haul ass or beat your ass (or worse) then haul ass. If you try to stall them in such a country they will know somethings up right from the git go and...........yep, tell the cop to go to hell and then get out of Dodge with a quickness.

I believe the "left" is referring to the victim. The officer in these photos looks like the woman to the right of him.

Doesn't mean that it is the same officer or even the victim in the photos. News accounts seem to be pretty sparse and do not identify the officer. So, I don't know (as I pretty much said before).

I will say that Texas law says that if you kill a cop using excessive force, it sucks to be the cop. So, had this guy been armed, and he killed the cop, he probably wouldn't have been charged for it.0 It'll probably a while before we hear anything definitive on the case.

Which of course is a complete and utter fantasy at least for civilians in the United States.

Anyway, here's a British SWAT team who managed to take down a shooter and perform life saving CPR in under six seconds:

And here's a fairly balanced article about how things work in the UK that acknowledges the difficulties we face, but the one thing that sticks out to me in this article is that hardly any of the ones the author knew stayed long term in the force, yet plenty of lazy fucks manage to make it to retirement here.

totally lost me with that last part: not many UK cops stay long on the force, yet lazy fucks manage to retire in the UK or the US? What do you mean by "here?"

Do the UK cops stay on the SWAT team part of the force long or do they stay on the police force in general long enough to retire? The reason I'm wondering is SWAT are elite and have to be at the top of their game physically & mentally - it's in most cases a young man's thing. Obviously being a run-of-the-mill cop until retirement age is feasible since quite a few do it here in the US. Depending though on the location you police, it would indeed take it's toll on your emotional & mental health (negatively affecting your physical health of course).

I started reading the comments and DAMN! there are a lot of people who are demanding a murder charge. What part of "charges can always be upgraded" is so hard to understand?
That's why having a lot of time in pretrial confinement (or out on bond) can often backfire. Sure you get more time to prepare your defense, but the prosecution gets more time too.

It's certainly possible. The same district attorney's office recently got a murder conviction on a cop in that area.

Manslaughter seems to be an appropriate charge. If her lawyer is smart they are already working with the prosecutor for a plea deal.

Really there is no valid defense she could offer here. There is only one scenario where she could even conceivably have a chance of getting a not guilty verdict and that is if he answered the door and pointed a gun at her. Even though she was at the wrong door that would be a valid excuse.

But that didn't happen. He had no gun and was unarmed. So she has no excuse. It's not her apartment. He opened the door and she shot him on the spot. She didn't even give a second thought to it. She pulled out the gun and shot.

She should save everyone the trouble and plead guilty. Her career as an officer is done.
