Anyone have any ideas for what to do with a giant hole/niche meant for a tube tv? Best idea I’ve heard so far is a half depth bookshelf that opens up with a wall safe behind it, but truthfully I have nothing exciting or valuable to store.
This. I wish my fireplace had a cubby like that for indoor firewood storage. It's convenient and looks cool.
that's an electric fireplace/convection heater, isn't it? if so, then everything is likely hollow/uninsulated. I'd just cut it all out and re centre the fireplace. either that or replace that midbulk/mantle over the hearth and open the shelf side vertically. That depth you could make it more of a nook or a hanging chair.
Gas fireplace, so no need for wood but it does have a chimney - definitely not hollow. I do like the idea of having the larger vertical opening on the side. I don’t know. I love my new place in a lot of ways but this whole fireplace wall just isn’t doing it for me. It’s going to be a dining room if that helps at all.
whatever ya do, that middle band thing has to go. looking at it further, the asymmetry of the tiles at the mid column is starting to give me an eye twitch. maybe reface it? If the tiling is essential, at least get it centred. what's the depth? about 14-16"? I'm thinking cupboard if it's to be a dining room. Slap a door on there that'll compliment the firebox... maybe a shelf or two. guessing it's centred on the wall, so cutting out the entire TV side isn't an option.
Okay, dining room, that opens up possibilities. If you're someone who drinks alcohol, that might be a good place to store your booze that you want people to know you drink (you know, the fancy stuff, and not the bottle of whatever you grab when today has just been absolutely shitty as fuck and since I don't have one of those mind-erasers from Men in Black, this is the next best thing). If you're someone who likes to decorate based on the season or the holiday, I'd say that was a pretty good place to put dioramas themed around the season, etc. It'd also make a good place to store the fancy tablecloths and napkins typically reserved for important company. You know, so you can subtly tell your guests either this ain't fancy, so go ahead and relax, or "Fuck you, you ain't special, otherwise this stuff would be on the table."
:O damn.. I'm kinda with Tucker here... that's enough room for a bar fridge and three step booze rack.
Another thing that you could use it for, now that I think about it, is a place to store food seasoning that someone might want to add before they start to eat. Not merely salt and pepper, but stuff like red pepper flakes, hot sauces that don't need to be refrigerated, and the like.
I have maybe one drink a year, but that would at least make sense there and look nice. Would absolutely have to be under lock and key though. My little one looks very sweet but she’s feral. well damn. I got nothing. No alcohol, no tablecloths, no napkins.
Ooooh, then here's how you can have fun with it: Get some empty booze bottles, add some water to them, and some coloring agent (tea is a good replacement for whiskey), then sit back and enjoy the fun. You could probably pick the tablecloths and napkins cheap at a place like Goodwill. If not, you could probably find something there that when folded up looked like a tablecloth and napkins.
She’s 3 so the concern is more how she’s gonna slice herself with the shards of glass after she breaks all the bottles. She’s quite…we’re gonna say active. Active and accident prone. Many, many times a day we hear a loud noise followed by “I’m okay!”
Kids love to climb inside of things and hide. Looks big enough you could put a small bookshelf and some cushions for her to sit and look at picture books.
oh... how old is the house? asbestos may have been banned in 1980, but a lot of drywall still contains it till about '84-85.
How about converting the space into slide out drawers, or converting the space into a slide out desk with an all in one computer?
My thought is if you could stop the decay you could easily seal a body up in there. It would probably have to be a non-obese person, but you could easily seal it up and keep an eye on it to make sure it wasn't disturbed. You could get a good decade out of it, and maybe more if there were some sort of fire or something later. Just keep those options open because you never know when you might need a good place to hide a body.
