RT rating for WW is 97% with 34 of critics rolling in as of 1 am Tuesday. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wonder_woman_2017/ The spread of reviews ranges from positive wavey-hand, to "HOO-FUCKING-RAY!!!! ". No full on negatives so far. Suicide Squad had apathetic wavey hand, to "this movie killed my family!! Oh my gaww-haw-hawwd!! ", type reviews right away. I have a good feeling WW will hold in the 80's-90's.
The Shmoes, Jon Campea, Chris Stuckman, and Grace Randolph all liked it. Campea was the least positive, saying it's at about the same tier as Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. II; Grace was the most, saying it knocked The Dark Knight out of her top three movies of all time. I'm thinking it's pretty solid.
First off, Grace is a moron, she's all over the place and can't be trusted. I find the Schmoes and Harloff in particular to be the most reliable. If it's on par with Ant-Man, I'll take it. ETA: Grace is only good for shot by shot's. Her comments are beyond retarded most of the time.
Garth Franklin from Dark Horizons just gave it a good review, and he's a kind of a snot who's hard to please.
Holy shit! Grace is comparing it to Indiana Jones and Superman 77. God I hope that's true, it literally brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. I'd love a return to those type of movies. And god bless that WW finally gets a movie. Too bad Alamo decided to be discriminatory, otherwise I'd go see it there.
Saw it. Not a home run, but a pretty solid triple. What's good? The depiction of Themyscira. Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta and Robin Wright as Antiope. Most of the humor. That the sexuality of the Amazons is addressed, albeit obliquely. Gal Gadot and her disturbingly pretty face, made for close-ups. Diana's naivete and her beliefs about the corruption of mankind. Chris Pine as Steve Trevor. The No Man's Land sequence. That final moment between Diana and Dr. Poison. The movie is feminist in the best way, not the preachy, man-hating way. What's not? Runs a little long. Plot points are too convenient. Main villains are not particularly interesting, and there's a surprise villain you'll see coming a mile away. Unnecessary usage of an historical figure in an ahistorical way. A little bit of spectacularis overloadnum in the finale. A chock full o' diversity set of teammates who do very little of their established specialty and who become generic action guys. I agree with Jon Campea: not a Top Ten Superhero flick but about on par with Dr. Strange or Ant-Man. 7.0/10
BTW loved it My 8 year old was enthralled. When woman crossed no man's land and saved that village (very similar to Iron Man 1) my daughter was wideyed and smiling. It choked me up to have her finally have a super hero woman to look up to.
I thought it was great. I enjoyed this a lot more than the other recent non-Nolan DC movies. It's so refreshing to get a traditional superhero who is bold and clearly knows her purpose and is about love and peace. Someone who isn't dark, conflicted, and angsty. She was more like the Christopher Reeve Superman. One of the things I disliked about MoS/BvS was how mopey and angsty the Henry Cavill version was. There wasn't as much contrast there between him and Batman. At least it wasn't as stark of a difference as had been previously depicted in the comics and in the DC animated universe of Bruce Timm. That's still the gold standard for their relationship and depictions. Ironically I think it was the Nolan films that convinced DC/WB to go with the dark and serious route with the DCEU. Hopefully this movie's success will show WB that it doesn't always have to be that way. Wonder Woman was bright and colorful and romantic and funny and just a nice change of tone. Felt a lot like the first Captain America movie with the retro World War setting. Best DC film since The Dark Knight IMO. Oh and by the way I did see it at the Alamo theatre. Nearly every showing was completely booked up so I think the boycott was a lot of hot air. Kind of like the racists trying to boycott Star Wars because of the black storm trooper. No one cares, it's just a movie. Had some minor issues with the movie. Some of the dialogue wasn't all that great and had some issues with her changed backstory and some of the fiddling around with the Olympian mythology. But I guess Thor did that too with the Norse myths. This movie feels like a blend of 70s Superman with the morally unambiguous hero, Captain America with the setting, and Thor with the mythology and the fish out of water element.
Looks like it's going to break projections for its opening weekend. http://www.darkhorizons.com/wonder-woman-soars-to-100m-debut/
It was so good. I got chills when she was kicking ass. If this is what femisists were really like, sign me up
They liked it, but still nitpicked it. Mike hated that there was any little speck of the Zack Snyder tone on it, and wished it could go back to full-on Christopher Reeve in tone.
Saw it this afternoon. Not bad, but suffers from the curse of the DCEU. The antagonists were weak, especially once the big bad was revealed. Movie seemed a bit scattered in places, with characters introduced who sort of started to have backstory but then just petered out. The interactions between Diana, Trevor, and Etta Candy were done quite well, tho. Seven out of ten. Not quite Captain America: Winter Soldier good, but for damn sure better than most of the dreck Warner has been doing with the DCEU. Audience reaction where I saw it was very enthusiastic and favorable.
