Poster: "Truth, Justice and Whatever" They just can't say , "and the American way" Way to tank your next movie James Gunn. https://www.instagram.com/p/DSFy0co...d&ig_rid=b43520b3-e616-4077-b08b-407fc83e345d
Someone please explain to FF that a) Gunn/DC is not intending a slight to America but drawing a contrast between Superman being a boy scout type and his Supergirl being a rebellious teen who doesn't care as much about truth, justice or the American way, at least at the onset of the movie. b) The effect of this marketing campaign is almost certainly not going to "tank" Supergirl at the box office or anywhere else. That is, if Supergirl is a good movie (which almost all Gunn's movies have been), it probably will do reasonably well box office wise.
This Supergirl is a party girl. You think a party girl is gonna be saluting the flag, and kissing a bald eagle? Come the fuck on. EDIT- Shit, Raoul beat me to it.
Do you think that party girl Supergirl with a foul mouth is a good way to introduce the character and appeal to kids?
I watched "Conan The Barbarian" at 10. Corny G-rated "Supergirl" came out the same year. I enjoyed both to different degrees. Conservatives need to stop treating tweenagers like toddlers.
A. The character isn't just for kids. B. The character (so far) doesn't have any fouler mouth than basically any other person her age. She said "bitch" once....ooh! C. I'm sure kids actually do like party characters with foul mouths. See the long-time popularity of South Park, for example. D. As always, it depends on the execution. Since the majority of depictions of Supergirl over the years have had her basically being little different than a blonde female version of her more famous cousin, it may be best to differentiate this Supergirl from the onset. The question is if she is going to continue to be the wasted party girl or if she is going to have a character arc that makes her more responsible. I personally would see her more interesting if she's always got at least some edge to her. But your mileage will vary.
If you were at all a person I could trust to honor a bet, I'd bet you in the dark that Supergirl beats your precious 2.5x production budget standard at the box office. Sadly, I can't.
If FF is serious about wanting a G-rated Supergirl, there's 126 episodes of Melissa Benoist to show his children. So, make some kids, and buy those DVDs. Easy-peasy.
Is that "rule" written down on an official studio document somewhere? No? Then I give it all the credence it deserves.
A) True, but you need a family friendly movie to get people to the theaters. See Zootopia 2. B) Irreverent Supergirl worked in Superman Animated because Superman was there to show her the ropes. I'm not so sure it works on it's own. C) Parents don't want to take their kids to see that shit though. Parents have the money, kids don't. See this year's box office numbers. D)Sure, but Superman didn't do so well. James Gunn's new DCU is not rolling out very well and Jim Gordon has yet to send out the Bat signal and Lanterns got postponed so I'm not sure, "Truth, Justice and Whatever" is the right move for promotional material especially when you're pissing off your core audience. But, sure double down, see what that gets you.
It's a general rule that's been around for decades and you can choose to ignore it, but it won't change the way they calculate things. It also won't change the fact that we haven't seen a new Star Wars movie in theaters since 2019 and a new Star Trek movie since 2013.
I will say even as someone unabashedly liberal, there were plenty of anvillicious moments in CW Supergirl that I found tough to take. FF and his future kids would no doubt stroke out at much of the show, from its support of a transgender heroine to its clumsily handled immigrant metaphors to Supergirl canonically kicking Superman's ass. Unless that is your intention, you sly dog....?
The last Star Wars movie in theaters, Rise of Skywalker, beat the 3X production benchmark https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt2527338/ So the fact that we haven't seen a new Star Wars movie since then has nothing to do with its not making the benchmark.
https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/comments/1pj9n8y/new_teaser_for_supergirl/ Teaser for the Supergirl trailer tomorrow Some real Guardians of the Galaxy vibes in there. Looks like it will be off world and establish the alien part of this DCU "But they didn't say "The American Way" on a poster!"
Movie posters have exactly zero meaning in my life, I've never cared about or paid attention to them and they most certainly wouldn't sway whether or not I'd see a film because I'm not a fucking loser
I remember a time when movie posters were cool and I wanted one on my wall and maybe it did make me want to see the movie. Now it's just, "whatever"...
Called it. Fucking called it. They held their breath long enough for the poster to come out, but I fucking called that shit.
