These tweets you refer to also always carry threats of violence to go with their mean words, which is illegal in the UK. This is the part the angry right wing echo chamber conveniently omits when they rage about it

I'm not surprised you don't see the irony in whining about someone being arrested for posting this:
"Instead, horrified, and in the fog of a developing tragedy, she’d reposted on X another user’s content blaming newly arrived migrants for the ghastly crime"

But yet are fully in support of Ozturk being arrested for writing an op-ed in critique of Israel.

And these people were released. Most far faster than Ozturk. So by your own words, they have nothing to complain about, right?

The censorship in the UK is abominable but let's not pretend it couldn't happen here.

Just recently Biden tried to set up a "ministry of truth" to monitor and censor online content that only failed because someone found a vid online that exposed the person heading up the new department as an absolute maniac and the whole thing fell apart. He also oversaw the systematic smearing and persecution of Gaza protesters on college campuses (along with the ritual humiliation/subjugation of college leadership and staff). Oh, and he supported the official congressional action to equate antizionism with antisemitism. Oh! And his regime banned TikTok (to appease "israel") because its users were becoming too pro-Palestine. And those are just the examples that spring immediately to mind.

    Not that Trump's any better.
He didn't roll back any of Biden's encroachments and Trump along with others in his regime are fond of declaring his detractors ought to be punished with arrest, deportation, or simply doxxing and being labeled unemployable.

We aren't better... we just prefer the 'frog in a pot' method of desensitization and acclimation before doing the really horrible stuff. It's less messy, I reckon.

Yeah I read those links, in those there weren't any links or anything to the actual tweets, what these people have actually said, so it's tough to say

In one of the articles they make is seem like an epidemic of people being arrested yet have to go back to 2018 for one of the examples. Also one of the examples was a case I'm familiar with and he was never arrested, just brought in for questioning and released

My understanding is threatening violence in a tweet (although he bar is quite low for that) will get you nicked. The examples I've seen that have landed people in prison have a "I'll knock your teeth out" type qualifier at the end of it

Saying that the UK gov't is certainly cracking down on free speech and engaging in censorship and it is troublesome - it's well documented that officers show up to people's houses to question (not arrest) them about mean tweets, which is a giant waste of time and resources. Just fucking fix potholes and create jobs you wankers

yup, we're required to call emergency services if someone is uttering death or suicide threats (ideations). That translates into two cop cars and and ambulance team most times.

thing is by not acting and if something actually does happen, there's liability.

Read again. There were examples in there. Just not the all-important screenshots if fucking tweets. There is also the details of the policy being enforced. But you don't care as long as people you disagree with are the ones being hassled.

I don't care what side it's on, if you're advocating collective punishment of a group, I oppose it and I think it ought to be a criminal offense as well.
It's not my fault that most of the people doing that are people who align with you ideologically.

the fact is you sourced from a news organization with a poor reputation for honesty or accuracy. pretty much a step away from quoting Dayton's Diary.

And as Crosis pointed out, there's pretty much nothing to refute as they give descriptions of the texts but not the actual texts. I wonder why they'd do that if not to mislead?

Also, why did it have to be a screenshot? How about just direct quotations of the text messages?
Or is that to much to ask in a news report?

we've got one tenant who's a bit of a tinkerer/firebug who lives in one of the rooming houses we admin.
a while back he sidewalk scored a gas barbecue.
so we're discussing today how to get rid of the barbecue and the question of how to dispose of the tank came up-specifically what to do with it until it can be taken to the transfer station.

one of my coworkers suggested "just put it in the basement storage". (Edwardian era house, just under 6' ceiling in the basement, along with the furnace)
I reminded her that you're generally not supposed to store them in enclosed areas specifically, and indoors in general.

of course, she knows better so I pulled up about 15 different links from propane suppliers to OSHA all saying the same thing.
three hours later she comes back to tell us one of the maintenance guys thinks it's okay having asked him in the vaguest of terms.

this discussion is reminding me a lot of that one.
