Oh, cool, the last couple episodes, and the upcoming Christmas special are all directed by Rachel Talalay. She directed "Freddy's Dead", and "Tank Girl". It's hard for women directors in Hollywood, glad she's still around, even if in TV. EDIT- Oh shit, she did "Heaven Sent", too!!
Well, it's not like you didn't see it coming. Time Lords were switching sexes all over the place the last couple of years. Personally, I think it's long past due. We'll see how she does.
Lol some of the twuntism has spilled onto TBBS' Doctor Who subforum if you fancy a laugh and don't wanna wait several days for a new account to validate at GallifreyBase (man, I've never been gladder to be permabanned from there...)
To appease male fans, Doctor Who announces every Dalek will have visible penis LONDON – After severe backlash from male fans following the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the first-ever female Doctor, the producers of Doctor Who have announced that every single Dalek in the new series will have a penis and testicles visible at all times. “We thought people would be excited by Jodie because she’s such an accomplished actress,” said showrunner Chris Chibnall. “But the fans have spoken: good sci-fi needs dicks and balls, apparently.” Daleks are one of the main villains of the Doctor Who universe, first appearing in 1963. While the show creators never explicitly stated the sex of these small robots, the addition of male anatomy to their heads has been met with excitement. “I was angry because a female Doctor made no sense. I mean, how am I supposed to connect emotionally to a non-male character?” said longtime fan Curtis Mayflower. “But with this change, the belligerent robots who display inexplicable fear of and rage towards the Doctor are now strangely relatable.” However, others see in these penises another push for unnecessary inclusiveness. “Oh sure, you think the show runners are standing up for tradition,” said longtime fan Kyle Marcus. “But one of those Daleks had a black penis. We all know Daleks are white. It’s canon!” This is reminiscent of male outrage over Ghostbusters, which lead to the release of an alternate cut where Slimer is fully erect for the entire film.
Fucking awesome. I always like it when TPTB shake things up, and Jodie Whittaker is a great choice. I loved her in Cranford and Black Mirror (haven't seen Broadchurch). The geek reaction is priceless. This will almost be as fun as watching the nerdverse go apeshit over the 2009 Trek reboot.
True, so that is at least one way in which this will actually be easier than following his act with another old or young white male.
Indeed, the idea has been floating around since the 6th Doctor if not sooner, but they always chickened out, and didn't pull the trigger.
Excellent point. I always thought Capaldi was under-utilized (mainly by poor scripts). But this season he's clearly been allowed to show his chops and I think he's my favourite Doctor of the modern era. He's a tough act to follow and, as much as the producers are being (wrongfully) accused of being politically-correct, going with Jodie Whittaker is also a very smart strategic decision.
Actually, back to the 4th Doctor. Tom Baker made a comment at a press conference that he wished the best of luck to the next Doctor "no matter who he or she may be."
I'm thinking they are just mimicking Capaldi's style for now so as to keep the new style under wraps. Also, ditto the notion of making her ginger in the actual (non-promo) transformation.
that was one of the things I'd been mulling. A young-ish white male in the traditional style would have a huge task following Capaldi....also, having telegraphed it so hard with Missy the logical time to do it would be with the regeneration that immediately follows their having spent a thousand years (or whatever) directly interacting while he tried to reform her. Still, took some guts for Chipnall to put his eggs in such a basket right as he takes over - given Broadchurch we're likely in for some really good stuff but he definitely rolled the dice. BTW, major kudos to BBC for keeping it so securely under wraps. of all the videos I watched guessing and speculating i don't think I saw her name come up even once as a "rumored" possibility.
Facebook just reminded me that you can see the 13th Doctor fight aliens with Finn from Star Wars in "Attack The Block".
The only thing I can see being an issue is the "Doctor doesn't always win" stories. We've had them and they are great for reminding us WHY the Doctor needs mere human companions or isn't God, but now they'll be seen as "weakness" due to the gender swap. She'll have to tuck away a few awesome wins immediately, which the naysayers will also take as "SJW bullshit", like a woman couldn't possibly be competent even if said woman is the latest incarnation of a 2100 year old Time Lo/ady who scares the shit out of eldritch abominations on a weekly basis.
Dear Dr. Who fans, welcome to our world! -Love, Ghostbusters fans. https://ghostbustersnews.com/2017/07/16/female-dr-news-give-us-insight-ghostbusters-backlash/
Not equivalent. If they had re-cast Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore as women with the same names, that would be equivalent. If Doctor Who had a spin-off with a different Time Lady as the main character, that would be equivalent.
Tell that to the knuckleheads spouting the exact same "SJW!! SJW!! Toxic feminism!! ", crap as last time.
The BBC grew a pair - or maybe just borrowed a Time Lords.... Pleasantly surprised - surprised as Dr Who is a major profit centre for the beeb, and they've been risk-averse. Maybe with the enforced changes with Top Gear (their other previously 'untouchable' series) someone went for the risk. Main worry will be the scripts. I hope Chibnall can get some female writers in, rather than we get some alpha-nerd version of how females work. We already had a whiff of that with Missy (oh female, so that's how the Master developed some empathy!)
Not familiar with this actress, but I find the idea of a female Doctor appealing. Shake out some cobwebs from the franchise, that sort of thing. As some of you have already said, it's really going to depend on what sort of scripts we get. I hope they don't "launch" with a Dalek episode. Do something different this time. "Hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically . . . run."
You can face palm all you like. My observation about the differences between Dr. Who casting a female 13th Doctor and the Ghostbusters re-booting with an all female cast would have no impact at all on those who cry "OMG SJW POLITCAL CORRECTNESS" etc.
I could walk you through how dumb you're being right now, but it's clear you're just going to go full Dayton on me so...
