    I think one of the things the lynch film and the miniseries did much better was to establish the horrors of the harkonnens. The punishments and cruelty of the harkonnens were perverse. This may be better explained in part 2, and in this one the anihilation of the atreides was swift and cruel, but the did not take the time with the baron gloating as much over his victory and reveling in torturing any captured people. They also have not yet established the Baron's son as being a cruel and brutish failure yet. That would probably be more present in part 2, but him loosing paul was much more of a big deal in other versions.

    This podcast episode has an interview with one of the guys who was involved in developing the sound effects for both Blade Runner and Dune. The Dune specific bits come at the beginning and then about 15 minutes from the end of the episode. Interestingly, he says that they delved into the research Frank Herbert had done on forcefields and used that to try and create a sound that realistically matched the science behind Herbert's thoughts.

    This podcast episode focuses solely on the sound engineering behind the film.
