I really can't make any kind of solid prediction until after the 2nd weekend and we're still 2 weeks out from the premiere, but I'm going to say worldwide box office of just under $400 million for this, losing Disney around $250 million. :bergman:

So, this is what Volpone just does now? Plays Statler & Waldorf to the MCU?
    Huh.

    No.

Statler & Waldorf were funny, not one note and usually had an inkling of a point.

If Statler & Waldorf were like Volpone, they would be like, "I don't have any actual knowledge to base my guess on, but I predict that tonight, the theater will be only half-full and Big Muppet will lose millions."

God bless him, this was my father's favorite comics(along with Xmen) and I've just never got the appeal. Maybe its because I came a generation later that only new what was on TV or movies and F4 didn't get that mass push until I was already an adult. And when they did come on the big screen they were (IMO) average at best. Maybe this new movie will help change my opinion.

The generational thing makes sense, since @Lanzman loves the Fantastic Four and is 94 years old.

I think back in the day it was trailblazing to have a team of superheroes who a) worked together all the time b) didn't have secret identities and spent basically all of their time on the do-gooder biz and c) fought and cared for themselves as family.

The problem with the Fantastic Four is that better teams and characters have been introduced since their debut.

They get credit for being the first out of the gate and for introducing the Marvel universe and many of its most important characters like Doom, Galactus, Silver Surfer, etc.

But pretty soon after their debut Marvel introduced Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers.

The Fantastic Four aren’t as compelling as some of these other characters, in my opinion. The X-Men are a way more interesting team that has been constantly evolving and fighting against difficult odds.

The Fantastic Four are from a simpler time and have been stuck there. But I think this new movie will be entertaining. It seems like it is taking the right approach and leaning heavily into the anachronism aspect.

The retro futuristic styling could make this interesting to check out and offer something that stands out from the rest of the Marvel movies.

Disagree. The FF are different and more interesting because they're not a team but a family. Different dynamics which very few other team books explore. When the FF are done right (think the Lee/Kirby days or John Byrne's run) they are absolutely epic.

That kind of supports my point. You are referring to comic runs that are 60 and 40 years old at this point.

What have they been up to recently?

The recent Secret War stuff with Doom World was interesting. I have a feeling that is what they will adapt for the next Avengers movies.

I do like the characters but they’ve been overshadowed and left behind in the Marvel Universe.

Maybe this movie can rejuvenate them.

The Incredibles are basically what you are describing… a team that is dealing with threats as well as family dynamics.

So it is possible, if they can get the right tone and appeal to modern audiences.

It almost goes without saying that the Incredibles was a homage to the FF, even borrowing their powers. Mr. Fantastic's stretchiness->Elastigirl, Thing's strength/invulnerability->Mr. Incredible, Invisible Woman's invisibility and forcefield projection->Violet's powerset. They even have Jack Jack take the flaming form of the Human Torch among his transformations.

But so far, it's been rare that the FF movie/animation treatments have a fraction of the heart or the wit of the original Incredibles.

The early reactions to movies are always people kissing ass

Not to say i think the movie will be bad

But these early reactions are basically people saying great things no matter what so they’ll be invited to future early screenings

Nah. I've seen many an early reactions that were mixed or called a film garbage. Remember, if a studio thinks a movie is shite, they won't do an early screening for anyone. The fact that Disney showed this to critics ahead of its release indicates that they don't think it is a total abortion.

That would be good for the posters: "The Fantastic Four: We don't think it is a total abortion".

Clearly, the best Fantastic Four movie would be one where they're all MAGA and they fight a horde of illegal aliens from Alpha Centauri. At the end Reed builds a cosmic wall around the Solar System and the Kree are charged a 50% tariff on all imported goods. That's the movie America really wants.

So the board was down (at least for me) for a bit.

Did it crash because of how wrong Volpone is?

Nay, good sir, of the decade. Of the decade. Much like "The Marvels" was the second best MCU film starring an actress named after cheese.
