From what I've heard is that these producers are so risk averse that they won't greenlight something unless it's has an IP attached to it and that's why we are getting all of these reboots, remakes and continuations.
and where did you hear that? on the internet? Yes, Hollywood will always do things that will give the highest return on investment. Even if it pisses you off. That is the world in which we live. A capitalist world. and the only thing that matters is how much money can someone make. you want capitalization, don't you? The other option, communism, is bad and we can't have that can we? So, guess what? Hollywood doesn't give two shits what you or other internet assholes think. They will do what will make them the most money. and if all you do is bitch about science fiction, they will assume you will not pay to see it. so it doesn't get made. Which part of this process are you not understanding? I can put it in visio for you if that would help.
I wasn't having an issue. I was not fully understanding what you were saying until this last post, which I take to be: Nathan Fillion etc, of 2026 are different enough from their counterparts from 2002-2005 that even if they were to all come back for a reboot, it would be different. Fair enough.
I said EXACTLY the same thing you did. I just added the name of the factor. you supplied everything else.
I don't accept that the only two options are capitalism and communism in order to get good science fiction.
Indeed. It would honestly be hard as hell to do anything like the original with a cast of people 20 years older than they were then. A movie maybe but not a series. My condition is this: if the consensus is that Weadon can't be involved, then it has to be Tim Minear running the thing. I don't trust anyone else with it.
I guess I have a lot of faith in these particular actors and a heck of a lot of potential producers to do justice to the concept, whether it was a continuation of what was in the show and movie or a cartoon that let us go back to before the pilot even or in the immediate aftermath of Serenity. I think it would be actually relatively simple to do a series under the present conditions, if everyone were available and the powers that be were willing to greenlight it. Back in 2002, 20+ episode seasons were the norm and pretty much everything was done on the fly. In the modern era, they can basically plan out just 8ish episodes for a season, and have the broad arcs of those episodes written beforehand. The number could allow for shooting around Nathan and Morena's and anyone else's other acting commitments. Besides Tim Minear, I would inherently trust pretty much everyone who worked on the series in a writing and producing capacity, Drew Greenberg, Ben Edlund and Jane Espenson in particular since they presumably know and love the characters and the 'Verse as much as anyone, have done great work both with and without Whedon, I am sure that if someone went a different direction and consciously wanted to tell stories about these characters in a distinctly non-Whedonesque voice, they could do it. I know that there have been regular and graphic novels set in the 'Verse. I imagine at least one or some combo of them could be adapted well enough by anyone with some skill. But all this is largely academic if all that is being announced is that the crew is going to join Nathan and Alan on a podcast, or there is going to be a reunion special or something like that.
Enough interest in a reunion could lead to some kind of revival. But of course then we have to contend with Whedon deciding to kill Wash out of nowhere.
I'm sure the creative types can deal with that. If it's in cartoon form, they can just set it prior to his death. If it's live-action, Wash can be in Zoe's head (although it would suck that he doesn't interact with the other characters in that way) If they want to up the sci-fi factor, he's a clone/robot with a Wash AI. If they want to go soap opera, he's Wash's identical twin brother Bohan Washburn. Or they can just write around his absence. I would include flashbacks but I do think that both Alan and most of the rest of the crew are older looking so that wouldn't work unless you did CGI to reduce ages or repurposed old clips and I'd rather not.
I think we could all do with a bit less Whedon these days. I really don't care who directs or produces a movie, if the writing is good, everything else should fall into place.
I'm not factoring the theoretical possibility of animation in any of my musings here. You can do basically anything if animation is on the table.
You have very low standards if you think anything I post here is anywhere near ‘debate’ level of presentation.
Hey, remember the time I won Captain Chewbacca's account because he bet me that Serenity would make more at the box office than Star Trek Nemesis? LOL, fun times. Anyway... Firefly is dead. Even the "bring back Firefly" meme is dead at this point. Young adults now are like, "bring back what?" And I think it's safe to assume Joss Whedon is never going to work in Hollywood again. If you can't make a comeback from being canceled when the MAGAs are in charge then it ain't going to happen. I mean, it's tough to sell female empowerment when it comes out that you weren't allowed to be alone in a room with Michelle Trachtenberg. I've even seen youtube videos where new reviewers see Joss's punchy dialogue as very "90s" and "dated." Not to mention that the "lost cause of the Confederacy" angle ain't exactly going to play well these days. And I'll say what I said back then... Firefly isn't terrible good science fiction. Until Serenity came along, there was almost no world building. The ship was basically a barn that flew by magic. Nobody could decide how fast this ship was supposed to be going. And we debated about whether this show was taking place in a single solar system or a galaxy. Serenity worked to fix that, but you literally have to get through the entire series to get an answer to those basic questions. And several elements of the show just never came together like they were supposed to. Kaylee was originally supposed to be Asian, but casting hates casting actual Asian people. So none of the series Asian references really make sense because there's hardly any actual Asian people in the show. Humanity couldn't get to the new solar system without all the Asian ships, but I guess once they got there the Asian people were tired of all the white people and just kept going. And the writers admitted the universe wasn't supposed to be as western as it was. That was just all they could afford. So we've got a poorly developed universe with dated dialogue and themes, and a creator in Hollywood exile. So what exactly are you bringing back?
Well... that new Buffy series is dead. So I wouldn't hold out hopes for Firefly's future. The Whedon-verse is over. Everything has an end point and I think we've reached the conclusion on this. But who knows, somebody with deep pockets might step up to throw their money away.
My bet is very much on it being animated. Much cheaper, allows them to keep Wash, less of a time commitment for all the cast members. Also means they can keep the same setting and political situations. The original series vibes are based heavily around it being in the years after the war. You'd expect things to be very different vibes wise a quarter of a century later.
I know! Wash was only mostly dead, and then Simon, River, and Kaylee turned him into a cyborg! As for Book, when the Operative came to kill him and everyone else, it turns out Book was also an operative so the Operative let him go, but he had to fake his death so he made a clone real quick and it was the clone that died. Book can be in the new show in the form of CGI and an AI generated voice. Everyone loves it when dead actors are replaced with CGI!

Glad the announcement was not pure hype. I hope it becomes a done deal. I was a fan of the Arrowverse for the most part, but dunno if the guy behind it is the right person for the project. I also don't know if I love the proposed animation style. Still, fingers crossed.
And there it is. Per the article, they want to fit it in between the show and the movie (logical) which is a very fertile field for stories yet untold and while it's only one image, I like the art. One might wonder who the voice actor for Book will be. First things first though. Gotta sell it.
