And not only that, I bet that she would be getting even less food thanks to the evils of shrinkflation.

I honestly think we're beyond whatever bastardized, broken form of capitalism western society once had. We're now into the "let's see how badly we can fuck people over" economic model.

I saw this exact thing on Twitter but it was a single guy in his 30s (not a married couple) so I'm not sure how accurate it is, could be one of those things that people just pass around

Saying that, shit be expensive today. Feels like a global pricing reset to a higher level

And just so everyone knows ocean freight from Asia has gone up about 700% this year so expect some goods to get even more expensive

fair enough... but by the same token the place I used to get my lunch for $5 several times a week 10 years ago now charges $11.

my morning coffee shop has gone from $1.75 to $3.25 in that same time...

I can't really comment on national grocery chains because, well, Kensington Market :D. But we've lost a crippling number of our independent merchants... it's more like a food court here on weekends.

All that government spending during Covid by injecting too much money into the money supply while simultaneously restricting large swaths of the economy. Turns out there's real consequence to bad monetary policy.

Since prices are going up, that means the cost of labor goes up too and we get more money right?

    Right?

Oh, no, layoffs happen, so as a whole people make less money.

Whatever businesses need to do to keep making record profits, I guess. It'll all trickle down eventually. They've been promising that it'll trickle down for decades now, can't be too much longer.

thing is I cited stuff that went beyond the timeframe of the meme... government stimulus of the consumer rather than corporations doesn't really factor in if you track back 10 or more years.

I'd also venture that our temporary U/GBI kept not just small businesses, but also a few industries from collapsing.

Didn't Trump do that? And wasn't that done with over three years ago? And wasn't it the equivalent of like half of a rent/mortgage payment over six months?

Or are you confused on the dividends you got from your trust fund?

I think that shopping basket was carefully chosen to illustrate a point.

We lived for so long with low inflation. People don't remember the 70s and 80s.

Yes governments fed the animal by dumping cash into the economy during the pandemic.

Currently governments are tapping the brakes with high interest rates.

Both work. Yeah money is stupid, but people should be smarter.

Counterpoint: inflation would have come down anyway, and interest rates have had little to do with it.

    Dead poors.

    They always want dead poors.

Even if they're working in a sandwich joint due to lack of any useful education.

Actually, that was derogatory and I apologize.

There was pent up consumer demand that really took off after everyone got vaccinated. Coupled with the fact that many corporations did not attempt to fix their broken supply chains. Because that costs the company money.

yeah, it's cute to blame "the government"... but let's get to the point that rents have doubled in the past 5 years.
and that share holder profits have likewise increased ridiculously.

unregulated capitalism inevitably leads to feudalism or fascism

The government is the only thing that tamps down on gouging the public for profit. The idea that a corporation is going to just lower their prices to help the consumer when they can make extra money ripping off the consumer is stupid. Why am I going to sell a cheeseburger for 10 dollars when I am selling them for 20? This is why you get places like McDonalds selling their shitty burgers for the same price I can get them at an actual restaurant.

Consumers love to get ripped off. How many people buy starbucks coffee or McDonalds over a restaurant? How many people buy the name brand at the grocery store and then bitch about inflation? How many dolts shop at whole foods or trader joes and then whine about how much shit costs? How many people do not know how to buy food anyway?

The AI installed with the Bill Gates microchips I got from my 5G vaccine are telling me to say yes.

They also tell me that the superpowers I gained from their presence are much better than the alternative which seems to be letting worms eat your brain, and I agree. I would much rather have Bill Gates microchips than brain worms.
