Interesting. It's still hanging onto its 73% rating with critics, but it is down to 58% (rotten territory) with audiences. :marathon:

There's a whole shitload of reboots that come out every year. Aside from possibly Star Trek, I haven't seen a single one of them receive as much outrage from angry online dudes as this one. What's different about this one movie?

Most reboots are failures and generally disliked. So GB is not unique in that regard. Why did it get a backlash from the start? Many reasons depending on who you ask. I can only tell you why I disliked it from the off, which is that I didn't want a full reboot and I don't care for Paul Feig or Melissa McCarthy. Those were immediate turn offs for me.

I think a lot of long term fans felt that Sony was just whoring out the brand and didn't really have much respect for what people liked about the property in the first place.

My personal opinion is that if this had been a true passing of the torch sequel, with a different cast and director, then the four women team would not have been so much of an issue. Not for me anyhow.

Early audience ratings probably reflected the uber fan component, whereas now, people who just went for the sake of popcorn and a/c are weighing in with lower opinions.

While I can respect that and believe that it is true for you, I think 14thDoctor's question is still fairly pertinent. Most people not interested in a movie just say, eh, plenty more to choose from. But you have to acknowledge, there was a huge stirring of anger about this one, more than we should expect just from the points you have raised. Some people were clearly angry about something else.

    It's really out of proportion.
Conan, Robocop, and Total Recall were as big or bigger films than Ghostbusters, and while there was nerd sneering, there wasn't nerd RAGE.
Why did this one have to be the hill people die on?
I think a good chunk of it was SJW vs MRA politics got dragged in, but that was only after, certain media outlets didn't help, and SONY should have stayed out of it, but like that Liana K video I posted, I think they thought they could spin it the way they spun "The Interview".
No, studios, don't get into culture wars.
    They're not a debate, they're a riot.
    No one wins.

    Is it a "bomb"?
    Not so far.
It could still, but it's on track to make its production budget back after this weekend.
    Only the third week.
Hasn't opened in every country yet.
People who liked it report going multiple times.
    We will see...

The budget listed on Wikipedia doesn't include the $100 million spent on advertising. Curious...

You must have been sleeping when F4 came out .

Fact of the matter is it wasnt funny and the trailers did a poor job selling the movie.

Okay, but there are plenty of POS comedies and reboots every year that don't this level of mouth foaming. Adam Sandler didn't get harassed for Pixels last year. BvS bombed and we all moved on in a week.

"Pixels", literally raped my childhood via Josh Gad having sex with Q-Bert.
    I don't care.
There's still "Wreck It Ralph", and Speilberg is making "Ready Player One".

BvS still has people freaking out all over the net, whereas Pixels didn't have anywhere near the dedicated fan base to disappoint -- people generally in love with videogames, yes, but no-one specifically married to a 'Pixels' brand.

And lest we forget, one thing that certainly helps the ruckus is this calm and sensible attitude from a film's supporters. I don't remember anyone going 20 pages in a rabid quest to destroy anyone who dared dislike Pixels.

Packard, I know the German people have historically had trouble with humor, but do you really think I want anyone to drink poison, and die over a fucking movie?

    And "rabid quest"?
Fuck you, I've just replied to people.
If it had just been Ghostbusters news without people taking potshots, not at the film, but at me, it would have been 5 pages long, tops.
Now your side wants to paint some narrative where it's some poor tragic victim?
Of a thread you could have avoided?
I want some of what you're smoking.
Sounds like it could tranquilize rhinos.

People give Adam Sandler shit all the time, for pretty much every movie he makes now. Hell, the guys at Red Letter Media suggested that a lot of his movies are just excuses for him and his friends to go on a vacation and that there might even be some form of fraud involved. And as for no one continuing to complain about BvS, maybe not here, but I've seen plenty of continued whining about it on other SF-themed boards. And for all the tired attempts at implying the reaction to this movie is entirely because of sexism, I'll just point out all the other movies with female leads that were popular, and how the new Wonder Woman trailer hasn't received anywhere near the backlash that this movie got from its first trailer on. But, yeah, I'm sure the reason this movie has so much hate directed toward it is because sexism and not that Sony took a much-beloved movie, dumbed it down, sold it on a gimmick, and called everyone who had a problem with this a sexist.

Exactly! I don't remember any bitching about Kill Bill or Tomb Raider. If the movie is good it will get the praise it deserves. If it's bad then it will get the thrashing that every other movie of a beloved brand gets.

And 'm not sure what forums Anna fequents but I know on the science fiction forum of trek bbs they're still arguing back and forth over BvsS and it's been out of theaters for quite awhile now.

I reckon you need to go see it at least 5,000 more times to get yourself a sequel.

Imagine if that Animated Feature were with the original Busters. I'm sure, under such circumstances, nobody would object to Ramis being recast (Maurice LaMarche!!).

So you only pay attention to the people who are trying to save face actively saving face? Even that comment basically just says "we haven't lost as much as you say". Surely it needs to say "we've made a good profit".

The box office speaks for itself mate. If it had China then maybe it'd scrape past. On top of that the audience reviews have remained mixed.

Gotta look at the history. This is a major franchise brand. Remember Superman Returns? Made a decent profit. Seen as a failure. Remember Die Another Day? Highest grossing Bond film until Casino Royale. Brosnan sacked and series rebooted nonetheless because of fan reception. It's all about money. This movie just hasn't generated what it needed to have....and despite the claims from Sony, there is no way that the Ghostbusters licensing brand is remote as strong as others like Trek, Star Wars, DC, Marvel and so on. It needs to make about $100m in licensing in order to both off set any loss and then be seen as a profitable franchise starter. I just don't see how that's realistic.

There will be no Ghostbusters 2/4. I'd stake money on it.

It's a shame in a way as I'd kinda hoped that a sequel might've done a multi dimension thing and brought in Dan and Ernie as their original busters. But I reckon the luckiest you'll be to get another Busters movie is another reboot 5-10 years from now.

Ghostbusters is probably one of those movies that's gonna do "meh" at the box office but will be huge on home video (blu-ray, Netflix, iTunes, what have you).
