Studio people who say, "Yeah, we really fucked up with that project!" tend not to work in Hollywood for very long.

Not a good year for two beloved franchises: Ghostbusters has fallen well short, and Star Trek Beyond is set to do only about 50% of what its predecessor did.

To put it into perspective, remember The Legend of Tarzan movie recently? Came and went, mostly lackluster reviews? It's running about $150 million *ahead* of both Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond. Kung Fu Panda 3 and Warcraft have done more than twice the business.

I think both of these franchises are headed for a hiatus and a reboot.

As much as I saw it as a distinct improvement. I won't be crying crying if Beyond kills off Abramsverse. Just proves that big budgets and action aren't all that it takes to give Trek longevity, which I have said through the life of the reboot.

I honestly don't believe that summer blockbuster is where Trek lies. I think Trek was best in that middle of the road budget where the story was the most important think. I think Ghostbusters is the same.

I'll be enjoying GB16 in my blu-ray collection regardless of what happens.

That's true of Trek, but Paramount refusing to advertize the fucking movie didn't help, either. It's like they didn't think a Trek movie with a medocum of celebriality would make any money. :jayzus:

Not a wise move when you've got Suicide Squad coming behind you like Michael Phelps in the 100 m Butterfly.

I wouldn't count Star Trek out so quickly. True, it's numbers aren't quite as good to date as they were for the previous two, but it's already the third highest grossing Trek film, and it only took two weeks to get there. Also noteworthy, the gross has already beaten the budget. They will make more without a doubt.

Can't say I'm as optimistic about Ghostbusters, but I agree with Dicky that there is a lot more to it than box office alone.

Here's the thing: Star Trek is a cash cow for Paramount at this point. It is almost as tied to the brand as the mountain logo, has consistently made it money and will continue to with licensing, etc.

Ghostbusters was an amusing film with a lackluster sequel, a long-gone Saturday morning cartoon and some merchandising tie-ins. Nothing has been done with the brand in any way for years and years. If this isn't a hit, there's no more incentive for a sequel than there is for a sequel of the Robocop reboot. Heck, Robocop was, in some ways, a more successful brand than Ghostbusters.

Part of me has to wonder how much the poor marketing hurt the films' performance. Both of them had really poorly received first trailers, though in Trek's case it seemed like the studio just wanted to give up on it given the response compared to Sony apparently thinking they could cash in the "if you don't like this movie you're sexist" schtick.

With STB, it may not be making as much as studios want, but most people wh have seen it, love it.

I don't think the "you're all sexists" shtick helped them at all...especially with Feig having to backtrack upon release of the movie.

Red Letter Media have summarised it well.

    Especially since it never happened.

You know what's not in that RLM clip?
Footage of Feig or a Sony rep saying "if you don't like this movie, you're sexist".
Cuz it's not out there to be had.
    Doesn't exist.
    Didn't happen.

    Buzzfeed dimwits said it, sure.
    Who cares?
    Fuck them.

I absolutely love that. First off it shows how big of a cocksucker Paul Fieg is and it isn't because he's gay. Sony paid for positive reviews, but, but Dicky said it's impossible. I love how the woman producer( forget her name) literally says, "how often do you see women in movies?" And the reply was, "you don't.":lol: Really, you're really going to make that claim. Never mind that the biggest blockbuster of 2015 and possibly the biggest franchise ever, Star Wars, starred a female lead and was the hero of the film and is the next Jedi. This just reinforces my belief that everyone in Hollywood not only lives in their own bubble, but are completely retarded.

This is in addition to Feig's meltdown on Twitter when he told everyone to fuck off.

Then there was Melissa McCarthy playing the "sad manchild" angle....

    http://uk.businessinsider.com/melissa-mccarthy-responds-to-ghostbusters-hate-2016-6

Which she also played when she was here in the UK on The Graham Norton Show.

Then there's the well established deleting or reasonable criticisms from YouTube by Sony and leaving sexist remarks. This particular person was a victim, and is a female fan! Deleting comments is damning. That is unless you're claiming countless people who had their comments deleted just made it up?

And what about the media narrative that saw every, every article or review concentrate on the "sexist fanboys". Where did that narrative come from? What were Feig & Sony doing throughout? Saying it was unfair or playing up to it. Oh yeah, it was the latter.

Hell, even you were perusing that narrative in this very thread until several of us explained that our criticism were specifically about a female cast.

So let's not pretend that there wasn't a concerted effort to paint any and all fans who were critics as whining male sexists with no lives.

    He's not gay.

Not impossible. Sony have been caught doing it before. Not that it has yet been proved to be the case in this instance. It could just be that critics wanted to feel worthy and were scared of being labeled sexist with a negative review.

It's called media driven narrative....and it seems there are plenty of people who fall for it.

This is the second time you've made the accusation, and you couldn't back it up the first time.

All right, I was riding my "Suicide Squad", buzz, didn't want it killed by any of this crap, and had a backlog of SS spoiler reviews to get through, and it took all night.
Then the Rogue One trailer landed.

Now, I can dig through all this horseshit.

    *Does so*

    Wow.
    It's nothing.

None of it's the smoking gun of "if you don't like this movie, you're sexist".
There were openly sexist assholes trolling comments, and that's who were being talked about.
    No one else.
The rest is conspiracy theory, guilt through association, and flat out insinuation.

You would laugh at Blackdove for using that level of proof for his conspiracy stuff, or Async for religion.
    Disappointed.

Trek is a mega brand. GB isn't....as I pointed out above.

JJTrek has more of a chance of a sequel than GB does. Why? Because the merchandising revenue is 1000% times that of GB.

I've already done £120.00 on the Diamond Select GB figures this past year. Dicky has bought 2 movies tickets. I still have all the Real Ghostbusters stuff stoed in my parents' loft. So I need no lectures about GB merchandising. I'm keeping it alive more than Dicky the Ghostbusters hero is. But I am under no illusion of the fact that since GB in 1984, there have been hundreds of figures iterations of Trek and just a few of GB.

    Btw, who is "Brett White"?
