Firearms are now the leading cause of death among children and teenagers in the United States, figures suggest.

More people aged one to 19 died from gun-related injuries in 2020 than in vehicle crashes or drugs overdoses, according to analysis of federal data by researchers at the University of Michigan.

More than 4,300 died of firearm-related injuries that year - a 29% increase from 2019, they found - based on their analysis of mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The figure includes suicides, homicides and unintentional deaths.

An article detailing the researchers' findings has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
"In the last 40 years, and almost certainly before that, this is the first time that firearm injuries have surpassed motor vehicle crashes among kids," Jason Goldstick, co-author of the article and a research associate professor at the University of Michigan, told NBC News.

Well, no-one in the USA has the right to kids.

But almost everyone has the right to guns.

This alone suggests y'all got your priorities fucked.

Though the GOP do seem very focused on ensuring folk are forced to have kids they DON'T want.

One wonders why they never considered making gun ownership mandatory. Especially as some dumbass point against making health insurance mandatory.

Well, I like to play Duck Hunt/Wild Gunman with an expensive zapper, and paper men, so children are just going to have to take one for the team.
    Paper-man-Duck-Hunt is really fucking important.

Which children? Where do they grow up, how are they being raised, and how did they gain access to the weapons?
    :jayzus:
Don't look at single-parent households or gang activity. Don't fault a lack of good role models or healthy outlets for aggression. Pretend you can solve this problem by fixating on the weapons they use, because that costs you nothing and imposes no self-analysis or accountability on households that produce violent people.

TLDR: there was an increase in gun deaths across most demographics and types of gun deaths.

For more specific information, you could read up on the data that is cited.

god damn... you've gone full Oldfella.
overlooking the obvious euphemism and likely irrelevance of "gang activity" to the subject, explain to us on what basis you believe single parent house holds would be more likely to have an unsecured, child accessible firearm in them.
then maybe you'd like to describe what you visualize this irresponsible household to look like?

So, we've got more of a suicide problem than a homicide problem.

And isn't it surprising that, given their "tough" gun laws, New Jersey and California don't have much lower gun-related deaths among young people than Texas or, really, just about any of the other states in the West? It's almost like their tough gun laws only affect people who aren't actually committing violence with guns.

I would count a “right to kids” as part of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” myself. Now, expecting everyone else to pay for kids you can’t support, on the other hand . . .

So who should pay for things like the education of those kids the parents can't afford?

    Exactly, rhetoric over results.

Society always pays for the underclass. That payment comes from taxes, or the heads coming off of those in power, but the debt always ends up paid.

What does it mean then if not that? People will expect what the rules are. If the rules are that kids get an education regardless of whether or not their parents can pay, then why shouldn't they expect that?

Searching for "New England Journal of Medicine firearms deaths" literally gives the study they cite as the second Google result, given how much space they dedicate to telling readers the source I can only assume you didn't read the article beyond the headline.

Edit, here it is btw: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2200169

Is the problem too many guns or not enough drugs in school? Maybe we have done way too well at getting drugs out of the hands of idiot kids who so desperately need them.

Could it also be that deaths by trying to get on youtube have somehow altered all the other ratios by taking way too many teens out of the stupid overdose category?

Shut the fuck up with your boilerplate race baiting. Nobody gets a pass, and the same standards apply to everyone.

Raise your kids right, and it won't matter what temptations are accessible. Do NOT punish everyone for the negligence of bad parents.

As for the adults, how often does it turn out they had prior convictions for violent crimes but were released? Should the whole of society be tailored to curtail the behaviors of those least worthy to live in it?

umm... "race baiting" is when you use charming euphemisms like "single parent homes" and "gang activity", not when you call them out.

bonus points for the attempted beggared questions and sticking to the strawman of "bad parenting"

    nice try, OF2

I think I remember reading somewhere that 2020 had the lowest child death rate ever.

Between virtual learning and everything being shut down VMT plummeted so did auto deaths.

And since COVID didn’t really mess with kids but the lack of contact and masking lowered transmission of other infections meaning their deaths by disease also significantly dropped.

And with parents being home there was more supervision so accidental deaths dropped.

I wonder if there will be a corresponding population spike in the future because so many kids were not lost to other factors. Sort of like how the boomers were a thing.

That mighty be a bit morbid.
