Probably the most American of all holidays. First three day weekend of summer coinciding with when most folks have paid off their Christmas credit card purchases and so from a retailer perspective is the first major purchasing event of the year AND a day we solemnly reflect on the sacrifices of our honorable dead. Remember, your uncle didn’t die laying face down in the muck so you could miss out on 56 month zero interest financing on the nation’s top rated appliances.
I hate war. I hate the imperialism of the United States. What I also hate is how our veterans are treated when they've finished their service. I hate how there are men and women who served and some of them lost limbs, lost their minds, and instead of receiving the best care available, they're left to sit in alleys and on street corners begging for help. I hate that the suicide rate for veterans is inexcusably high. So yeah, I will remember all of the people who fought and died, but I wish we as a nation would do more to help the able bodied and disabled veterans who are here and still alive and with nowhere else to turn even though they fulfilled their promise to the country that promised to honor and care for them when they gave everything they had. Sorry, I get a little philosophical about this kind of stuff on days like this.
