Kalshi Defends Plan to Bet on Lives of Cancer Patients
"How is this not just another type of 'death market' — like markets for war or assassination — that even Kalshi says it won’t abide?"

Prediction markets Kalshi and Polymarket have long garnered a reputation for allowing users to make all kinds of ethically dubious bets, from the outcomes of deadly conflicts to raging wildfires.

And as the New York Times reports, Kalshi will even allow users to bet on whether clinical trials for potentially lifesaving drug trials will succeed.

But to researchers, it’s yet another morally bankrupt concept that could put real people in danger. There’s even risk that those enrolled in these trials could choose to drop out if the market were to bet against a positive outcome.

“Turning loose a betting market in an ongoing randomized clinical trial really is a breach of scientific conduct,” Robert Califf, who served as FDA commissioner in the Biden administration, told the NYT.

Kalshi first announced its “biotech prediction markets pilot program” last month, the same day president Donald Trump’s teleprompter guy was busted for winning more than $100,000 on Kalshi by betting on what he would say.

The company argued in the announcement that a “publicly listed contract on a trial or regulatory outcome produces a continuously updated, public probability that reflects the weight of the evidence rather than the preferred messaging of the trial sponsor.”
In a statement to the NYT, spokesperson Jack Such argued that these bets wouldn’t undermine research integrity, but instead cut through the hype surrounding biotech companies and the drugs they’re working on.

But those enrolled in drug trials were left appalled by the news.

“We’re literally trying to stay alive,” metastatic pancreatic cancer patient Walter Ingaharro Jr. told the NYT. “It’s not a game. The introduction of gambling into the process really creates an ethical mess.”

In an opinion piece for The Guardian, Boston University humanities professor Joshua Pederson talked about how his 12-year-old son has a “very aggressive tumor growing inches below his heart.”

“If Kalshi has its way, you could soon be able to bet on health treatments that could be essential to his survival,” Pederson argued.

While choosing a trial for his son’s cancer was a “terrifying experiment for which we feel ill-prepared,” turning to a prediction market instead of “our extremely qualified team of oncologists” feels “preposterous,” Pederson argued.

In short, it’s yet another example of prediction markets crossing a moral boundary by gamifying things with real-world consequences.

“The possibility that somebody out there might be wagering against my son, hoping that the treatment fails so they can make money, is enraging,” Pederson wrote. “How is this not just another type of ‘death market’ — like markets for war or assassination — that even Kalshi says it won’t abide?”

Tasia Fortune, 29, Identified as Woman Found Hanging in Tree Behind Vacant Jackson Home

The woman whose body was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant Jackson, Mississippi, home is 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, the Hinds County Coroner’s Office said on Thursday. Authorities have not said whether or not they suspect foul play.

The Jackson Police Department first announced in a statement on Monday evening that officers “located the body of an unidentified Black female” at the 500 block of Road of Remembrance, a mostly Black neighborhood, at 9:05 that night. Neighbors in the mostly Black Jackson neighborhood contacted police after finding her body, though it is not clear how long it had been there.

Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard, who publicly identified the body as Tasia Fortune on Thursday, said earlier this week that the body would be transported to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office to perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Fortune’s aunt, Etta Avolio, started a GoFundMe to help raise funds to cover burial expenses and final arrangements. The GoFundMe, which has a $3,000 goal, had raised over $1,600 as of Thursday evening. Avolio confirmed the fundraiser’s legitimacy to the Mississippi Free Press.

“Tasia Fortune was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend whose passing has left her family devastated and heartbroken,” Avolio’s fundraiser says. “During this lifetime, families go through ups and downs, and right now Tasia’s loved ones are facing one of the hardest moments they have ever known. Tasia was a strong-minded, big-hearted, vibrant young woman whose life was taken at just twenty-nine years old. Her loss has deeply shaken everyone who knew and loved her, and her family is now trying to begin healing while also facing the painful responsibility of saying their final farewells.”

“The family also wants others to know that justice will be served, and they hold firmly to their faith, believing that God is on their side as they walk through this heartbreaking loss,” Fortune’s aunt adds.

Ward 3 Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes sent a letter to U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger’s office on Wednesday asking for assistance, WLBT reported.

Mississippi authorities have investigated other high-profile cases involving tree-hanging deaths in the past year.

In September 2025, a group of student athletes found 18-year-old Delta State University student Trey Reed, who was Black, hanging from a tree on the campus in Cleveland, Mississippi. His death raised fears of a racially motivated murder, considering the history of hundreds of lynchings of Black men that occurred in Mississippi in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Ben Crump, the attorney who represented Reed’s family, cast doubt on the official ruling that Reed’s death was a suicide and helped obtain an independent autopsy. Last week, the Mississippi Free Press reported for the first time that Reed’s family said his girlfriend had received text messages from his phone the night before his body was found in which he threatened to hang himself. The family still has questions, though. They said they are waiting on the final independent autopsy results, but have not been able to reach Crump since January. Crump also represents the family of Nolan Wells.

On the same day that Trey Reed was found last year, police in Vicksburg, Mississippi, found the body of Cory Zukatis hanging in a tree. Misinformation spread connecting that case to Reed’s, with some falsely claiming that Zukatis, a homeless white man whose dog had recently been taken from him, was also Black. Authorities later ruled his death a suicide, too.

Police investigating man’s death in downtown Raleigh as a suicide

Medical staff and law enforcement responded to 318 S. McDowell St. on Saturday, where a man was found hanging from a tree in a parking lot about a half-block from Nash Square, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release.

Despite “life-saving measures” the man was pronounced dead at the scene, and “there appears to be no foul play involved,” according to the news release sent late Saturday night.The death is being investigated as a suicide, and the North Carolina Office of the Medical Examiner will conduct an investigation, according to the news release.

In the news release, the Raleigh Police Department said it wanted to “take a moment to acknowledge a disturbing post that is currently being shared regarding this investigation.”

“We understand that this loss may be deeply painful for those who knew and cared about the individual,” according to a statement from the Raleigh Police Department. “We ask everyone to please be mindful of the family and friends who are grieving and to avoid sharing unverified information or speculation while investigators continue their work.”

The Raleigh Police Department has not responded, as of 4 p.m. Sunday, to a request for additional details about what indicates that this death is a suicide and why foul play is not suspected.The News & Observer does not normally report on suicides nor the method of suicide, given research showing that news stories about suicide may lead to imitation. The N&O is reporting on this case given the public location of this death, the significant public discussion and the historic context of African-Americans being publically lynched and killed in North Carolina and the South.

“Yesterday, an African-American male was found hanging from a tree and RPD along with state and federal officials are investigating,” said Raleigh City Council member Corey Branch on Facebook on Sunday.

“I ask that we let RPD and the SBI do the investigating and more information to come.”North Carolina tracks violent deaths, including suicides, and found there were nearly 1,600 reported suicides in 2023, the most recent data available.

The majority of suicides among non-Hispanic, African-American men (63.3%) involved firearms, followed by hanging (21.1%), according to state data.

More than half of all reported suicide deaths between 2020 and 2024 in North Carolina were by firearm; 21.4% of suicides were by hangings, according to state data.
