Something doesn’t add up. Y. Pestis plague is treatable now if it’s diagnosed in time. If this started from a smashed test tube with known contents, how is anyone dead from this?
It's possible that the employee tried to cover up what happened until they fell ill. It's possible that TPTB tried to cover it up, which lead to the person not getting treatment in time. It's possible that the local hospitals didn't have enough of the right antibiotics to treat the first patient. It's possible that the exposed employee had an underlying medical condition which made them more susceptible to the disease. For example, if they'd had their spleen removed prior to this, they wouldn't have nearly the robust immune system as they otherwise might have.
