Desmond Tutu has passed away. A shining light amongst the crapsack that is humanity, the man leaves a large emptiness in the world.
Don’t know much about him, I remember seeing him on the news growing up, seems like a decent guy. I know he worked with Nelson Mandela.
In the UK, if you get a Second Class (Grade 2) Honours degree, it used to be referred to as "getting a Desmond" (a 2:2...). All round nice and extremely brave and intelligent chap. And his nose looked like a front view of Jimbo from Jimbo and the Jet Set.
Yeah! Fucking noses! Why can't they keep to their own neighbourhoods instead of mixing with decent mouth folk?
A true legend. I'm seeing quite a lot of generic platitudes towards the man, and as usual with people like this, they're designed to obfuscate and neuter the actual content of his activism. Let's talk about his position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Or on the necessity to try the instigators of the Iraq War in The Hague. Or his anti-capitalism.
Why the facepalm Lanz, surely if his death leaves an emptiness in the world then it's worthwhile to try and fill some of the gaps left behind.
I assumed it was because of the anti-Israel, anti-Bush W and anti- capitalism crap @RickDeckard tacked on the end.
Those were Desmond Tutu's positions. He was a proponent of black liberation theology, and pro-Palestinian, considering the current Israeli state as practicing the same Apartheid he fought in South Africa.
Lanzman likely was completely ignorant of Desmond Tutu beyond a vague association with the end of apartheid. He has no idea that if this was the 1980s, he'd be damning him as an extremist and calling South Africa the most Democratic state on the continent, one showing admirable restraint in the face of immense provocation. He'd take equivalent positions against Martin Luther King were he alive, another sanitised idol of popular culture who gets the same treatment every year.
Typical pop understanding od great man. We do not want to talk about why he was great. Most people just assume he was not talking about them.
