    two "grew up on SF stories" thoughts:

    1. speculatively, the "outer to inner" movement, maybe even directly to Earth instead of a layover in the belt, may have been initiated by an impact out there that diverted it thisway

    2. have they ever ruled out the old speculation that the belt is made up of the remnants of a destroyed planet? Because one could imagine a rogue Jupiter causing such destruction if it got too close (maybe collecting a few moons for itself in the process)

    For 2, I think it was determined that there isn't enough material in the asteroid belt to be a destroyed planet, even the size of Mars or Theia.

    The fact that a planet isn't there and that the belt doesn't even hold enough material for even a dwarf planet led to a fuckton of what we do know about objects in space now.
