What are the requirements to get a Photo ID in your state (Drivers License or straight state ID)? Post them here.

Also if you want to drink but do not have an ID saying you are over 21 how do you do it?

I brought my Alabama License and they took my picture and gave me a Washington one.

Sucks they don't have a vessel license here, I lost that endorsement moving over. :(

I know only one person who doesn't have a DL, they just carry their passport everywhere.

To get my original driver's license? (Neither of my states require a photo ID to vote.) Birth certificate from the State of New York, Social Security card (with my married name), and a bill with my married name and proof of address.

When I moved to CA, the NYS license was accepted.

I can't remember what I needed for my California license, but I think the documentation may have been provided by my high school. In Massachusetts I simply traded my CA for one that said MA. It's important to note that neither document demonstrated citizenship. As for drinking, both state's offer an ID card option that does not include license to drive.

Trying to remember what I used as an ID to buy alcohol, considering that (A) I was still being "carded" at 30, even though the drinking age was 18, and (B) I didn't have a driver's license until I was 31. :mystery:

I'd assume it was the same as it was until 1986.

The drinking age is actually a fairly mysterious thing. It's legal to drink under the age of 21 in most states under certain circumstances.

    • Applicants applying for an original Hawaii State Identification Card.
Anyone who has never held or is re-applying for a Hawaii State Identification Card must provide documentary proof of legal name, date of birth, social security number, legal presence and proof of principal residence address in the U.S.

Okay, decided to try finding out, and it seems that it isn't very clear in Massachusetts. The FAQ page sucks massively, and nowhere can I find which combination of documents satisfies the requirements. However, almost every place I've drilled down ends with something that at root requires a birth certificate.

When I first applied for one, and when I had a wallet stolen I needed three forms of ID from various columns on a list. First time it was birth certificate, social security card, and high school transcript. Second time I used a bank statement instead of the transcript.

As for buying age restricted items: I didn't get a license until I was 19, so I used my expired military ID to buy cigarettes, I also used it before I turned 18 because most people don't realize they give them to dependants too and assumed I was in the military and didn't bother checking the birth date. As for alcohol, before I turned 21 I used an expired driver's license that belonged to a friend of mine that kind of looks like me. After I turned 21 I always had one, but if I didn't it probably wouldn't matter because I only get carded like 10% of the time.

Funny thing is, I used my friends driver's license at convenience stores and bars frequently, and no one ever questioned it. The military ID, however, people constantly declared it to be a fake. A fake state ID is one thing, but a fake military ID, post 9/11? I wouldn't arrested and charged with fraud, I would be apprehended by the NSA and waterboarded. No one is stupid enough to make a fake military ID just to buy cigarettes and beer.

I should add, that for the counterfeit NJ ID that I used in college, the only required paperwork was green.

Well the dependents card DOES look kinda fake compared to a CAC Card.

Birth certificate is the basic requirement, with something supporting your address (tax return). I replaced my photo health card with just that. I think the fee for the birth certificate is supposed to be for replacing it, but the health card was free. The two of those will get you a driver's license and your SIN card. Both of those have fees attached.

I've never had an issue getting served since I was 16
