It might be related to the electrical issues the plane was having. Or the pilot realized that the plane wasn't getting enough lift and didn't retract the gear to perform an emergency landing. Also in the video, not that it's great quality, but it looks like the flaps weren't extended.

I'm not an aviation safety expert, but it looks like the flaps were up and the wheels were down, when the flaps should have been down and the wheels up. Whether that's true and whether that means anything remains to be seen. :clyde:

Flaps not being down would cause insufficient lift, and it's possible the pilot may have not raised the gear due to the plane not gaining altitude.

The pilots appear to have deployed the Ram Air Turbine, the 787 has six generators for electrical power. Two on each engine, two on the APU. The 787 can fly with only one generator if needed.

If the RAT was deployed, there had to be a massive failure of the electrical system, which could have been indicated by the previous flight. The RAT will deploy for three reasons, a dual engine failure, electrical failure, or a failure with the hydraulic systems. May explain flaps not extended.

The video isn't great, but there isn't any heat distortion/waves coming the engines either.

Also, it occurred to me that if the flaps weren't deployed but the landing gear was down. It may have been an error on the pilot or copilot. If they were aware of a problem, one of them may have accidentally raised the flaps instead of the landing gear due to panic or confusion.

The flaps control is to the right of the throttle control. The landing gear control is above that, in between the four LCD screens above the yokes.

My understanding (from watching a few pilot reaction videos):

    1. The RAT was deployed, and deploys automatically in certain scenarios, one of which is dual engine failure.

    2. A crash video with clear audio makes it clear that the RAT was spinning, but that the turbines were not making thrust.

    3. Two possibilities for dual engine failure: vapor lock or fuel contamination. Fuel contamination seems unlikely, but the.extraoedinarily hot conditions could've facilitated vapor lock in the fuel lines.

I was intrigued by the vapor lock theory. I've had it happen whilst driving a car (scary as shit) but had no idea it could happen to jet engines. Sadly it's looking more and more like one of the pilots deliberately threw the fuel cut off switches. There's simply no way for that to happen by accident. "Whenever you've eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." The "what" seems clear, but I doubt we'll ever know the "why". :brood:

Yeah, it pretty much has to be suicide by pilot now.

The switches were actuated (1 second apart), no failure could actuate them, and it's probably impossible to actuate them by any kind of imaginable accident.

The voice recorder caught one pilot asking the other why he deactivated the fuel pumps. Although the other one denied it, it seems he must have.

And the "he who smelt it dealt it" scenario doesn't make sense. If the pilot who asked had done it, he'd hardly want to call attention to it.

I think you're about right, but one pilot asking the other why he'd done it could be interpreted two ways. Conceivably he'd want to place blame on the other guy, for whatever reason.
Seems to me they should've left that part out of the preliminary report.
