Facebook was down? If I cared enough, I’d find that gif of John Travolta in Pulp Fiction trying to find the intercom buttons.

The people in my feed who are most upset about the Facebook outage and subsequent hiccups as they get it going again are the same ones who complain that Facebook is a hive of commie libs bent on silencing conservative voices.

Has President-for-Life Donald J. Trump addressed the world over the emergency broadcast system to announce his triumphant return yet? Just wondering.

From one of the chief complainers (more about the glitches than the banning conservatives thing).

    Really?

The only way you have to reach the majority of your friends is fucking Facebook? :wtf:

This isn't that unusual. Facebook is basically my contacts list these days. Has been for years.

I can't relate to that at all.

My contacts list for friends is in my phones. Not everybody wants to use Messenger, but everybody will respond to a text or especially a phone call.

IME, if you're a casual or long-distance friend with someone, you've just got their FB info. Someone local, or that you're really close to (say a relative), then you'll have things like their phone number and email address.

Yes. I don't have phone or email contact info for most of the casual FB friends I have (though there is a surprising amount), but I do for actual friends, even ones who I've never met in person.

The person I quoted seemed to be referencing the latter. :jayzus:

I don't use it so much any more. Hopefully this leads to some more people recognising the need to break these companies up.

Whistleblower has an interesting idea for how to reform Section 230: Companies like FB are still protected from prosecution of what their users post, but can be held accountable for their algorithm.

This is not surprising. It's just like gun companies. They want to produce their product, but not be responsible for what their product does.

And how far down that rabbit hole would you like to go? Should alcohol producers and car manufacturers be held responsible for drunk drivers? Should cell phone manufacturers and network operators be held responsible for distracted driving? Should Tide be responsible for idiots eating Tide Pods? Inquiring minds want to know! When does that icky concept of "personal responsibility" enter in to things?

I buy a gun. I shoot that gun (as is it's purpose). I kill someone. Gun company completely guiltless.
I buy a car. I drive that car (as is it's purpose). I get where I need to be. Car company completely guiltless.
I buy alcohol. I drink alcohol (as is it's purpose). I pass out. Alcohol company completely guiltless.
I buy Tide detergent. I wash my clothes (as is it's purpose). My clothes are clean. Tide is completely guiltless.

I find myself singing that song from Sesame Street - one of these things is not like the others ...
