    Re: "Man Of Steel", trailer

Hmmm, personally I have mixed views. I liked the start of the trailer and the introduction of Superman. It came across as good quality filmmaking, not just Superman.

I do, though, think this movie has "dark" written all over it, which, to me, isn't what Superman is about. I also felt that once he had been introduced the trailer descended into something that looked like another Transformers/Battleship style clone. In fact, I struggled to tell the difference between the generic action scenes and the ones from the recent Star Trek Into Darkness trailer. I'm worried that will be the lazy aspect of the film and it's downfall. Superman the Movie never needed to rely on such things, which is why it remains so good after nearly 35 years.

But, as I say, the biggest issue for me is that I don't look at the trailer and feel anything other than darkness. I hope the finished product allays my fears.

I don't know, I kinda liked it. Here's hoping it's not just a good Superman movie, but just a good, entertaining movie period.

Well, dark Superman is essentially "Gladiator", which inspired Superman, so...hey, if they come close to that novel, bring it on!
    The trailer gives me optimism.

Tears welling up in my eyes. Superman's alienation and loneliness come through loud and clear.

A savior that everyone loves is a comic book. A savior that everyone's unsure about (and perhaps fearful of) is a compelling theme.

    Looks awesome.

Meh, needed something 'super' at the end to underline it.
Looking forward to the inevitable cut with the Williams' theme on You Tube...

Lots of "blink and you'll miss it" moments in the second half of that trailer. Anyone familiar with the characters have any idea what we're seeing?

I disagree. It has "awesome" written all over it. Very true to the saviour nature of the Superman character.

But it's only a two-minute trailer and it's directed by that hack Zack Snyder, so I'm reserving judgement until I see the full movie.

    Loved this moment:

"My son was in the bus. He saw what Clark did."

"You have to keep this side of yourself secret."

"What was I supposed to do? Just let them die?"

    "Maybe."

I liked it. forget the action stuff, that's as necessary to a summer blockbuster attempt as a cast.

The character development stuff, both the scene Scorp mentioned (also my favorite) and the "bearded wanderer" business looks aces to me.

    Re: "Man Of Steel", trailer

    Some thoughts:

1:47 - likely death of Krypton
    1:48 - Jor-el and Lara
1:49 - bearded Clark walking through flames
1:51 - some sort of ship exploded
1:51-52- ship arrives, Zod (or minion) appears
    1:53 - building collapsed/destroyed as Lois and Perry(?)flee
    1:59 - Supes in custody
2:01 - midair battle between Supes and Zod

A few other unidentifiable explosions mixed in.

Oh, and the first flight scene is awesomesauce.

Looks pretty good, but I feel a bit of Chup's concerns. I'm not opposed to the idea of a brooding Superman, just not sure I trust it will be done right.

It looks interesting, but in a couple of shots, the guy playing Supes looks a little too much like Travolta for my taste. (Not a slam against Travolta, just that he's not someone I could ever picture playing Superman.)

Apparently, Travolta was considered for Superman about a decade or so ago, when a Superman-Batman film was on the drawing board.

The Broken Arrow-era Travolta might've worked, really.

    Re: "Man Of Steel", trailer

I don't relate to the feedback that this comes across as a "touchy feely" Superman (at least, not any more so that the pure-as-the-driven-snow boy scout in the animated DC verse)

Basically you have progression from a young person coming to grips with being very different and the possibility he will be hated for it (I can relate!) and moving into a period of young adulthood when he has to process the conflict between "stealth mode" and the responsibility to do good with the gifts he's been given to a man who's decided to risk the price he might have to pay to do the right thing.

It's perfectly consistent with the essentially GOOD Superman we've seen since at least Donner's first film.

I like everything everyone else has pointed out, and the bit with Martha Kent talking him down from being overwhelmed by his super hearing is tear-jerky.

I always thought things like that would happen with his powers.

Smallville played around with that quite a bit.

Did we watch the same trailer? I saw an unabashedly hopeful Superman cast against a cynical world of darkness, doubt and fear.

    I'm in.

I'm guessing that the movie will end with a bespectacled Clark Kent arriving at the Daily Planet, which will mark the resolution of his "should I or should I not go public" dilemma. He does both: presents himself to the world as Superman, yet leads a normal, private life as Kent.

Looking good. Snyder has yet to deliver a bad movie - though he is more of an action guy. This franchise does need some action after the last attempt.

I wouldn't want to write a Superman movie. Invincible man of steel, unlimited power, doesn't need to eat or breathe, is practically a god? Unless you want to build the world out of kryptonite, you have to come up with something that can touch him. Instead of going the BIGGER MONSTER!!!! route, they turn inside. Good.

I think Superman's compassion for other people--not Kryptonite--is his real vulnerability.

A being like Darkseid or General Zod can provide a real physical threat to Superman, but a human opponent has to either be well-hidden or willing to kill people to keep Superman at bay.

Luthor in the original Donnor movie employed both Kryptonite, and Superman's heart against him.
